| Error "The language of this installation package is not supported byyour system." while installing WebDesignerCore.exe
While trying to install Visual Studio 2008, I received the message below: "The language of this installation package is not supported by your system." I have isolated the cause of the error to a component which I believe is an Office component, called "WebDesignerCore". I've done all the Googling I can think of, but have not found a solution. And, I apologize if I am incorrect in believing this is an Office component. Can anyone provide any help or advice on what to look at to determine the cause? Thanks in advance for any ideas! -- sw |

I'm not certain, but it does sound similar to a problem I've encountered before on XP. If this solution doesn't help, please do reply. 1. Control Panel --> Regional Settings --> Languages (Tab) 2. Check both checkboxes and click apply. You might be prompted to put your Windows CD in the drive or to restart. 3. Try again? |

Ryan, Thank you for the suggestion. This does not seem to be the solution I need, though. Both of those checkboxes are already checked. I tried checking them off and on to see if it would "jog" anything into place, but nothing so far. |

Can you check your system locale? It should be set to English, and I think you'll also find it in the Regional Settings (maybe under a different tab, I can't remember exactly). It might also be labelled "code page", or something like that. |

| Re: Error "The language of this installation package is not supportedby your system." while installing WebDesignerCore.exe
Aaron, I do not have "2007 Office System Compatiblity Pack BETA" installed. My guess is that I have some other application installed which has added a component of Office 2007 which is somehow conflicting, but it is not clear to me which application that could be. Right now, I am removing Crystal Reports 2008, in case this is what has caused the problem. A few months ago, I installed the Visual Studio 2008 shell while installing IronPython Studio. Maybe that is causing the problem (even though it has already been removed)? Any other tips are much appreciated! It's been a long time since I have come up against a mysterious quirk in Microsoft software that I was not able to work around in some way. I am almost ready to give up and re-image the PC, but I am really trying to avoid that. - shannon |

| Re: Error "The language of this installation package is not supportedby your system." while installing WebDesignerCore.exe
Aaron, I mounted an ISO using Microsoft Virtual CD. My company has MSDN licenses, but I have not been able to find the original source DVD's - the only source I have available is an ISO. When running from the ISO did not work, I copied "WebDesignerCore.EXE" from the mounted ISO to a local drive and tried to run it. Note: This is the component where the failure seem to be occurring, which I saw by looking at the setup log. When this (silent) installer failed, I extracted the setup files from "WebDesignerCore.EXE" using 7Zip, and tried to run "setup.exe". This also fails. Do you know of another source for "WebDesignerCore.exe"? I tried finding it as a separate component in the Microsoft Download site, but was not able to. The closest I could find was Visual Studio Express 2008, which seems to include the same component, but this setup also failed. Again, any help is very much appreciated.. - shannon |

| Re: Error "The language of this installation package is not supportedby your system." while installing WebDesignerCore.exe
Aaron - Okay - I looked through the support options you suggested. I'll be honest - I've done Microsoft phone support in the past and have not had very good results. It generally takes several hours of phone calls in order to get to speaking with the right tech, and this is in addition to any internal effort I need to make to get any potential billing squared away. After that, I would expect several days of going back and forth to get the tech up to speed on the problem, and would probably spend a lot of time taking the same troubleshooting steps I have already taken. Plus, there's no guarantee the problem will be resolved by the end of it. Unfortunately, I think my chances of resolving the problem by rebuilding this PC from scratch are more promising, and will have a more controllable bound on the amount of time invested to do it. I do wish that Microsoft had some documentation on this issue though, or some documentation on troubleshooting or doing standalone installations of WebDesignerCore.exe, especially since a successful installation of Visual Studio 2008 seems to be very tightly dependent on this component. Thanks again for your efforts.. -- sw |

Aaron, Just a correction to your last message.. Yes, "WebDesignerCore.exe" is installed as part of the Visual Studio Web Authoring component. But it is an Office 2007 component. Here is an excerpt from the readme.htm file included with "WebDesignerCore.exe". References are made to Office 2007, not to Visual Studio 2008. I'll see what I can find on WebDesignerCore.exe. I have a feeling it's parts of Expression Web which uses Office 2007 shared components (upgrade to FrontPage 2003). But all the stuff in the CAB if you extract WebDesignerCore.exe is just shared Office files, nothing specific to an application. The best article we have out there that explains Visual Studio 2007 and Office 2007 dependance is this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942622. Now there are some known issues I've found that we had in some Office 2007 calls getting the same error installing Office that you got installing Visual Studio. >>Copied files from CD to hard drive and ran setup.exe from hard drive. >>Disabled anti-virus real-time scanning >>Extracted ISO again, weird one where characters were all upper-case, I >>think they extracted with another app to fix issue but it's not >>documented. | Re: Error "The language of this installation package is not supportedby your system." while installing WebDesignerCore.exe
Aaron, My best guess is that there is a registry key missing someplace on my system (which was probably removed during a buggy installation or removal of a related product or component). I have found some vague references to registry keys that might resolve this issue in some Google searches, but unfortunately nothing specific enough to help me understand exactly what needs to be added or modified. I also do not see this issue documented in Microsoft's list of known issues for Office 2007 components, even though a few quick Google searches seem to indicate the issue is fairly well-known among users. Here is the link to Microsoft's known issue log (which I found in the "readme.htm" file that is extracted from WebDesignerCore.exe): http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/pr...633871033.aspx |

| RE: Error "The language of this installation package is not supported
Hi Shannon, I encountered something like that tonight while trying to install VS2008 ENU on Vista Business French. I had some problem with the WebDesignerCore. I installed it separately by extracting WebDesignerCore, and it installed properly on my system. However, VS2008 would not detect it as installed and keep trying to install it (and fails miserably). I uninstalled the Web Designer component by Add/Remove programs, and tried another time to install it with the VS2008 setup, and encountered the same insult message ("The language of this installation package..."). Provided your problem is the same as mine, the following should help: Install WebDesignerCore by extracting it, and install it. You will find in your registry, in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Web Designer Tools , a subkey related to your region (on mine, this is 1036). Now copy your VS2008 install files on your hard drive. In the Setup directory, you will find baseline.dat This file contains the prerequisites, and the registry keys used to check if everything is ok. You should find in this file something like : [gencomp320] ComponentType=1 GFN=GFN_MID WebDesignerCore CleanCost=295000000 DefaultPath=[ProgramFilesFolder]\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\ DetectKey=HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Web Designer Tools\1033 DetectKeyVal=InstalledVersion DetectKeyValData=12.0.4518.1066 EncryptionOpt=0 EstInstallTime=180 Executable=WebDesignerCore.EXE CommandLine=/Q /install /1033 In DetectKey=HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Web Designer Tools\1033 Replace 1033 with your region code (mine is 1036), so the VS2008 setup can find your WebDesignerCore install. Run setup.exe, it should work. Took some hours to find it, hope it helps. Best regards, J.Longo |
