Error 1406 installing Office Enterprise 2007

I am having a laptop running with Windows XP Service Pack 3. It came default with Office 2003 installed. Recently I bought Office 2007 and want to install the same. But as soon as I start the setup, after few minutes it gives me an error “Error 1406”. Well there are various options like “Retry, Ignore and Cancel”. I clicked Ignore and the setup continues. But the same error appeared more than 10 times during the installation and kept on clicking ignore.

Though the installation completed but I guess it will block Office update KB946691 installation. Hence I need to re-install the office with out errors again. Can anyone please help me fix error 1406?

Error 1406 usually appears when your system conflicts with the registry. I have faced this error during my installation couple of weeks ago. It was “Error 1401: Setup cannot create Registry Key”. I guess you are getting the same. If yes. Try out these steps:

    • Right-click the WebRoot Spysweeper icon that is located in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar.
    • Left-click the Shut Down option.
    • In the Office installation Error 1406 dialog box, click Retry.
    • When the Office setup is completed, restart the computer, and then re-enable WebRoot Spysweeper.

I faced this error with my Office 2003 SP2. As you said it mat block the office updates, in my case it was doing the same, not allowing to install the updates and was giving error 1406. After lots of research and workaround finally I came to know that it was due to the lack of permission in registry entries.

Hence, what I did was backuped the registry, ran office repair assuming it will apply the required permission by correcting the registry keys. It worked in my case. Try the same. And if it wont work for you than simply try restoring your system to any previous working restore point and see if it works.
