Swine flu attacked India

Swine flu is an infection caused by a virus. It's named for a virus that pigs can get. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen. The virus is contagious and can spread from human to human. Symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Already India has seen over 40 confirmed cases of Swine Flu and the threat of a full blown epidemic in India is very real. The WHO has raised the Influenza Pandemic Alert to the highest level which is 6.

What’s really sad to note is that Indian govt’s lack of initiative towards educating citizens on Swine flu symptoms/precautions etc. Six people including two children tested positive for the influenza A(H1N1) virus Friday, taking the total number of people affected with swine flu in India to 50. At least 16 of them have been discharged from the hospitals on complete recovery. A 53-year-old doctor of indigenous medicine and a four-year-old boy died in hospitals in western Pune and southern Chennai cities early on Monday, taking the number of deaths caused by swine flu to six.

Re: Swine flu attacked India

Like people, pigs can get influenza (flu), but swine flu viruses aren't the same as human flu viruses. Swine flu doesn't often infect people, and the rare human cases that have occurred in the past have mainly affected people who had direct contact with pigs. But the current "swine flu" outbreak is different. It's caused by a new swine flu virus that has changed in ways that allow it to spread from person to person -- and it's happening among people who haven't had any contact with pigs.

Symptoms of swine flu are like regular flu symptoms and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Many people with swine flu have had diarrhea and vomiting. Nearly everyone with flu has at least two of these symptoms. But these symptoms can also be caused by many other conditions. That means that you and your doctor can't know, just based on your symptoms, if you've got swine flu. Health care professionals may offer a rapid flu test, although a negative result doesn't necessarily mean you don't have the flu.

Like seasonal flu, pandemic swine flu can cause neurologic symptoms in children. These events are rare, but, as cases associated with seasonal flu have shown, they can be very severe and often fatal. Symptoms include seizures or changes in mental status (confusion or sudden cognitive or behavioral changes). It's not clear why these symptoms occur, although they may be caused by Reye's syndrome. Reye's syndrome usually occurs in children with a viral illness who have taken aspirin -- something that should always be avoided.

Only lab tests can definitively show whether you've got swine flu. State health departments can do these tests. But given the large volume of samples coming in to state labs, these tests are being reserved for patients with severe flu symptoms. Currently, doctors are reserving antiviral drugs for people with or at risk of severe influenza.Source: webmd

Re: Swine flu attacked India

Since the World Health Organization's (WHO's) implementation of IHR (2005) in 2007, they have been notified of swine influenza cases from the USA and Spain. The way it can effect other people is from contact with infected pigs or from contact with infected humans.

Symptoms of swine flu:-
  • Body aches
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Temperature (fever)
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Vomiting

There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. The best we can do to prevent our self is keep ourselves informed about the happenings and the steps we can take to prevent the spread of the flu. With most of the affected people fitting the profile of a person with internet access,we believe the internet is the first place that people would come looking for information like symptoms, who to contact etc. Swine Flu India is an attempt to bring all the necessary information in one place. India cannot afford to fall sick. Keep yourself and others informed.

You can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza by
  • Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You can also use alcohol-based hand cleaners.
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Trying to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Staying home from work or school if you are sick.

Good Luck !!

Re: Swine flu attacked India

Hi, i am from Mumbai, India. As there is news that Swine Flu has claimed 7 lives in India as well so far, people are scared and searching the way for prevention from this disease. Fortunately, according to a SMS doing rounds stating Nilgiri Oil (Eucalyptus Oil) can be used to prevent Swine Flu infection on some of the measures suggested by Naturalists across the world. The SMS says that "Use 'Nilgiri Oil' drops on handkerchiefs and masks as one of the preventive measures against swine flu (NIV) National Institute of Vairology."
