Surfing internet can boost brain power

If you think that reading is the only way to stimulate your mind, think again, for a new study has suggested that surfing the Internet boosts the brain more than going through a book. Researchers at California University have found that browsing the web triggers centers in the brain that control decision-making and complex reasoning, particularly in older and middle-aged adults.Surfing the Internet could lower the risk of cognitive decline, for a new study suggests that searching the web could be a boost to the brain. The new study, to be published in the 'American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry', showed that surfing the Internet could be a boost for the brain, particularly for the middle-aged and older adults.

Crossword puzzles, suduko, and reading are all ways to keep your brain active as you age, but now experts say just surfing the internet can stimulate the brain. What’s more is that reading didn’t stimulate the same number of brain areas as Internet searching. The first of its kind to access the impact of Internet searching of brain performance, the study is to appear in an upcoming issue of ‘American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry’, according to the University.

The first of its kind to access the impact of Internet searching of brain performance, the study is to appear in an upcoming issue of 'American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry', according to the University. The study participants performed web searches and book-reading tasks while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, which recorded the subtle brain-circuity changes experience during these activities. "A simple, everyday task like searching the web appears to enhance brain circuity in older adults, demonstrating that our brains are sensitive and can continue to learn as we grow older.", said lead researcher Dr Gary Small of the University’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behaviour.

All the participants showed significant brain activity during the book-reading tasks, demonstrating use of the regions controlling language, reading, memory and visual abilities, which are located in the temporal, parietal, occipital and other areas of the brain. The research looked at the brain activity of 24 volunteers between the ages of 55 and 76 as they surfed the Internet. All the participants showed significant brain activity during the book-reading task, specifically in the temporal, parietal and occipital lobes of the brain, which are involved in controlling language, reading, memory and visual abilities.

In fact, the researchers found that during web searching, the volunteers with prior experience registered a two-fold increase in brain activation when compared with those with little Internet experience. Internet searches revealed a major difference between the two groups. While all participants demonstrated the same brain activity that was seen during the book-reading task, the web-savvy group also registered activity in the frontal, temporal and cingulate areas of the brain, which control decision-making and complex reasoning.
