Bill Tancer seems to think so. Bill is the general manager of global research at Hitwise. He is a "data geek" who analyzes online data and has learnt from his analysis of over 10 million web users that our online habits define us.
“As social networking traffic has increased, visits to porn sites have decreased,” said Tancer, GM of Hitwise. He noted that the 18-24 year old age group particularly was searching less for porn. “My theory is that young users spend so much time on social networks that they don’t have time to look at adult sites.”
And if their social and emotional needs are net in the social networks perhaps they don’t need to go there.
The same analysis tells Tancer that young Internet users are increasingly drifting away from watching pornography online, and are getting hooked on to social networking sites instead.
He says that the rate of searches for porn sites has dropped from 20 percent to 10 percent. People are increasing their searches for social networking sites. "My theory is that young users spend so much time on social networks that they don't have time to look at adult sites," states Tancer.
The analysis conducted by him points towards the trend of youngsters in the age group of 18-24 surfing less for porn and more for social networking sites.
