is it possible to connect two computers, with modems and a telephone line. not a telephone connection, but just the cable so that they form a lan?? my friend says the procedure for that was given in digit sometime ago.
is that possible?

but then how can you share data without sending thru the cable..or simple why the modem then..
Hey p}{oton. The article in DIGIt had explained how to connect two computers without an internet connection.U still need a telephone connection.
i think this is what you want
http://www.jagshouse.com/modem.html
btw you can also connect two PCs using your serial ports, parallel ports and infrared ports.
thnkx for the link abhay had the same query here
@photon thnkx for starting this thread was going to do it myself
this can be even done using a service called "hyper terminal". sending and receiving of files are pretty cool.
it is quite simple... . this is very simple... all you need to do it activate some services at the server side and there you have it...... systems connected.
zoid: hyper terminal requires you to dial a number and for that you will need a telephone connection which will lead to increase in your telephone bills. on the contrary p}{oToN here didn't want to use a telephone connection but just the wires.
now you can use hyper terminal in the technique mentioned in the link but only after you have connected the wires as explained.
try reading thru this ....it talk about confiugring a lan modem .

I've never heard of PCs connected through their modems using a phone cable, but it seems like a great idea... Do the PCs to be connected have LAN cards installed in them, you can use cross cabling to connect them without using a hub
Usb or LAN should give you the highest bandwith

my friend is doing this as a project for his IT courseUsb or LAN should give you the highest bandwith
modem, internet connection ?? why use all this when u can use serial cable connection..basically the serial ports fastest of all the possible ways discussed here...simple as a piece of cake..
GodMode, I guess this is for a specific project
Basically its just the Null Modem Connection concept.
Is it a LAN you want, or just a connection between them? By LAN, you're indicating you want addressing (think IP's) for the hosts; if this is the case, not easily.
Otherwise, where you just want a connection, and you're feeling a little crazy, yes, this is possible..
Find a good terminal emulator (think Bulliten Board Systems of the 80's and early 90's) where you can manually write AT commands... (ATH0 (that's a zero) and ATH1 will be key in your endeavour)
You'll want to find a Hayes modem command guide, too..
Have the systems pick up the line and negotiate (with reasonable synchony), and start your transfer using {x,y,z}modem...
It's slow, but works...
hmmm.....
i also wanna connect 2 pc`s using modem and telephone.. prob is that my friend stay around 6 min walk from my house.. and its just not possible to get a cable from my pc to his...
any suggestion??on how i can just send all the data to him through my telephone line itself?? if possible??
