Creating a Network

Hi

I have a BSNL Dataone Broadband Connection. Currently the ADSL Modem provided by BSNL is attached directly to my system.
I have another system at my Home and I wanted to share the this ADSL Modem along with the second system.
Therefore, how do i join them all together such that both the systems can browse the internet at the same time? Secondly, can we make the ADSL modem as an independent modem. That is I can either connect to internet using the first system or the second system or both at the same time?
What if I join both my systems to a hub and also join the ADSL modem to the HUB will I be able to access the Modem using either of my system?

I hope the abve didnt get you confused.

TIA

The hub thing will surely work . I guess you can also plug in the ADSL modem to one PC , hook on another NIC card on tht PC , and connect the 2 pcs also ( havent tried it , but read abt it someplace for sure)

Thanks darklight. If i hook the ADSL to one PC i will always have to turn on that PC if I need to browse the net from the second PC. I want to avoid that.
Either of the PC's or both of the PC's should be able to access the ADSL modem to connect to the net, is what i am thinking of.

Connect ADSL router (BSNL calls it modem, its actually a router) to the switch (I dont think you gets HUBS anymore) and connect the two PC to the HUB. You will have to assign the private IP address in the network card in the same range as an ADSL router and also give the default gateway as the IP address of the ADSL router. Define the DNS in the desktops and up you go for browsing from both PC.

Other option use the DHCP option in the ADSL router and select "Obtain IP address automatically" in the desktops.

aye . You need a hub for that . Techguy 's right . Btw.. a 8-port switch is generally called Hub nowadays which is actually a mini-switch .

Well ppl might call it a HUB but I am used to using the correct terminology...i.e. the switch, check on the panel of the switch, they dont write it as HUB....anyway it doesnt make a difference.

Another option is to use a Surecom Internet sharing HUB, its got 6-8 NIC ports and needs a separate serial port modem, so any desktop connected to this device can initiate the modem to dial and connect to the internet and you dont need to buy a separate switch also.

Thanks techguy

Today I bought a Dlink DES1008V switch and tried what u said. I dialed to dataone from the first computer and i was able to browse the net(the dataone router was connected to the switch).
Then I tried to browse the net through the second computer (while connected from the first) and was not able to connect to any sites. I was able to connect to all sites through first computer!! is it because when I connect to the net from the first computer i get some IP address, etc from BSNL but I dont get anything like that for the second computer???

Anyways here are the ipaddresses for both the computers when i am connected to the net:
Computer 1
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

PPP adapter dataone:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 59.95.3.120
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 59.95.3.120

Computer 2:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.11
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

Am i doing anything wrong? My BSNL router is MT880.
Pls help!!

TIA
Danny.

Re: Creating Network

First of i want to tell you that i had recently setup my own network between two computer for sharing of my Airtel ADSL internet. i had used SMC ADSL2 router SMC7901BRA for more information on this router use http://www.smc-asia.com/v2/index.php...=375&Itemid=63
It is provided with one usb(for administrator) and one ethernate port(for hub or directly to any node(computer)).

Well i am new to networking(Correct me if i am worng) but i see the problem with your setup
when you connected to computer 1 bsnl serve only to that ip address and not to any other, this mean if you want to connected to another pc you have to serve the comp 2 by the comp 1.
this can be done by using "Setup small home or office network" wizard in windows xp on both computers, ie you connect to internet on one by dialing and 2nd comp uses 1st comp to connect to internet. Well i think you should be able to use the net on both pc individually connecting from that one only.

Well in my router the username and password is saved in router itself so when i swithch on my router i automatically connect to internet. so i dont have to do any home networking.

Please tell me the input and output port you are having on your BSNL router.

ThumbsUp re:

if u want to use 2 pc's together then u've to disable the PPP adapter from first pc ..i think u must be using some kind of a connection manager & if its a modem cum router you dont need to use it... then configure your modem on abtain ip autmatically ...just lemme know how m,any port u got on ur modem & which one...to give u the right network setting the 2nd pc wont go online bcoz on 1 st pc u r using ppp adapter & according to networking with modem only 1 pc can go online at a time unless & untill u got a multiple ip's from ur ISP......

2) this is the 2nd way to connect both the pc's 2gether in the nw....use a switch in between & just share the internet between 2 pc's by enabling ICS on both the terminals.....s

GIVE ME THE EXACT PORT NAMES ON UR MODEM SO THAT I'LL BE SURE...& also lemme know wether ur ISP register the MAC address of ur pc with the modem or not .....
