Is there a way to use public wifi safely?

Hi! I don't know much about pc and security but i read somewhere that using public or any outside wifi connection with smartphons noteboks etc is not safe because the administrator of the network or other users could potentially read my traffic and thus have acces to sensitive information like credit card nr. Browse history etc. Is there a way to use these networks safely? Maybe using some kind of encryption like tor or something? Thanks for any help

To safeguard your access you can use multifactor authentication on VPN connections which is supported by both Google and Facebook. If you are working off-ste then you can use no split connection for VPN access. If you are using public wifi then you should also refrain from any financial activities or going to websites where you have to enter login information.
