how to check performance of VPN connectivity

Hi Guys,

Our company is on the process of implementing IPVPN connection to remote offices. One of our VPN provider is offering a 15 day trial period on their services. I just want to make sure that before acquiring their services, the service must be tested well and performance is excellent. I need help guys on what set of tests should i make to check the quality of service.

You can download a tool called IPERF that can measure maximum TCP and UDP bandwidth performance. It also tunes various parameters and UDP characteristics. Iperf reports bandwidth, delay jitter, datagram loss. All you have to do is select the "server", this is something on one side of VPN"
iperf -s

And after that you have to just select a "client", this can be your system or something on remote side:
iperf -c x.x.x.x

Thank you for your reply, I'd downloaded this tool and it works as expected. Now, I need to measure the capability of a 1MBPS IPVPN bandwidth with at 15 users.

Do you have any idea on how to measure every services that will pass through the tunnel? (i.e. Email(regular), Ticketing(if has issues), Active Directory, Video Conferencing(occasionally), VOIP, AV Server, etc.)

I dont think that it is possible to measure available bandwidth, you might obly be able to measure what is currently going across the line, since there are many factors that effect the lines maximum speed. Either ways you can try using something like MRTG which is a tool to monitor the traffic load on network-links and see if that works.
