How many viruses or malwares circulating out there?

Does anyone have any idea about how many number of computer malwares are in circulation today? How many different types of threat circulation all over the digital world today? If you say hundreds of thousands or millions, it is not the specific count at all. I don’t want to know the whole story. I just want to know numbers from one leading security company helps explain why some big numbers.

I have heard that recently the Windows platform stopped the count at 14 million unique copies. Trojans are the most common malware. Packaged and "porn malware" are respectively the second and third place. Yet there are major differences between the securities of the amount of malware. G Data suggested that in the first half of 2011 1.2 million unique pieces for the Windows platform were discovered, some 99.5% of all malware. McAfee reported previously that the number of Mac units is around 900, while Windows for some 22 million copies published.

The different numbers arise from different methods of classifying and counting. For example, there are companies that are all the anti-virus samples from different variants separately counting. Also, there are security companies, such as G Data, which are all different variations of the samples of the same kind as one family malware classifying and, therefore, to count only once. On average there are 10 different variations within a malware family. All these variations are detected with the same fingerprint, and the opinion of G Data is therefore not correct to count each one individually. We actually only count the number of fingerprints that we need to all malware samples to detect.

You can always take a look at the site of Symantec and other virus scanners; you might find you do have the necessary info. Overall, the virus experts of the company in 2009, claims to have something recorded more than 1.5 million new computer viruses. Thus, the past year a week for as many viruses, Trojans, worms and other malware have taken as the full year 2004. 90-99% is usually detected by a good scanner. Even if the malware is not yet known, many virus programs alone recognize the behavior of a program, whether it is possibly malware. How many viruses are there factual difficult to say - I guess a few hundred thousand millions of Windows and a few thousand-ten thousand for Linux / OS X. Linux viruses do not make sense does that have to do with the structure of Linux (e.g. there is no registry) why are viruses written for Linux meant a Windows system to infiltrate through dissemination, on Mac it's like why are 99.99% Windows killer and the rest does not work. This includes backdoors, rootkits, exploits, sniffers, flooder, viruses, worms and Trojans.

Symantec released its Internet Security Threat Report Volume XIII: April, 2008, which estimates that there are around 1'200, 000 species of virus. Those who are not very informed about this will seem impressive this issue, but in reality it is surprising that more than 58 percent of these viruses, 700,000 approximately, were generated only in the year 2007. When I read these reports I cannot say anything but "Blessed Linux."

Re: How many viruses or malwares circulating out there?

What emerges from this report basically is that in total there were 1,122,311 threats that antivirus software detected by Symantec. Of these, the new appeared in the second half of last year were nearly half a million, more precisely 499,811, among which include all types of malware such as viruses, Trojans and worms. What you need to take account of the malicious code that appears is that most are new versions of existing ones. This means that as the original version was successful, it creates a variant-or more of the same virus. And that the purpose of them-as we have said on many occasions, and not to destroy the PC, as was at one time, but now aim to control the machine and steal user information. As another factor to take into account, the report also pointed to vulnerabilities in Web browser: Mozilla in the 88 vulnerabilities were found, in Safari, 22 and Internet Explorer, 18. But the reality is that most of the threats are directed to the Windows operating system, so this system is the one who always ends up being the most insecure.

The number of unique threats to mobile phones and tablets last year was only 178, less than 2006 was.. Since 2004 recorded the killer virus 710 unique mobile threats. The largest number of mobile threats were detected in 2006, 191 to be exact. Last year stopped the counter 178, a threefold increase compared to 2010, when it still went to 80 threats. In most cases the Trojans (74%).

Mobile cyber criminals have a clear preference for the Android operating system. Since 2010 the number shoots up Android malware. Of the 178 mobile viruses that were discovered last year, there were 116 for Google's mobile platform. Symbian by 55 second, followed by J2ME (5) and PocketPC (2). For Apple's iPhone appeared no malware. In addition, there were around 3,500 malicious Android apps discovered last year.

Also, the cyber criminals are increasingly interested in money. Slightly more than half of all mobile malware in 2011 was financially motivated..

In 2011, 58 new viruses, Trojans and other malware for Mac OS X discovered, for Windows there were 14 million. According to figures from various security companies. The amount of Mac malware peaked in June last year, when only twelve unique pieces were discovered. In the summer there appeared several fake virus for Mac OS X. Apple added detection of scareware to the built-in virus scanner, and the threat a few months later disappeared. Most Mac malware copies are Trojan downloaders (50%) who download additional malware. Further falls in the fourth backdoor category. Trojan horses and rogue applications make the threat assessment is complete.

The Symantec security experts attribute the explosive growth in computer-pests on so-called polymorphic viruses. This use online criminals programming kits to build from an existing virus is another version with new malicious functions. Viruses are not reprogrammed, but mutated. It is easier and faster. Symantec released at the end of an annual report on viruses and other Internet threats. The virus researchers see more dangers in the new stealth techniques to package with which to spread viruses and online criminals and other viruses. Symantec observed an increase primarily targeted attacks on individual data centers or organizations. First, these attacks came on about five years ago and took place once a week, now there are about 60 such attacks daily. Mainly online criminals are focusing on botnets. Specialized viruses such as Stuxnet can thereby be tailored to specific goals.
