How to run Exchange 2010 alongside Exchange 2003

From the past one year I have been running the Exchange server 2003. Now the Exchange 2010 is in my hand and I would like to run it alongside the existing Exchange 2003 environment. Do you think that I will be able to have Exchange 2010 on it or will I get any issue with this? What changes should I need to do in AD 2003 before installing Exchange 2010?

As far as I know that there is a possibility to upgrade to or install Exchange 2010 in your current Exchange 2003 environment without upgrading to 2008 AD. I have heard that the Exchange 2010 changes the schema. However if you are using the pure Exchange 2003, in that case you can go for the Exchange 2010. Microsoft has offered a pretty simple way to upgrade even if you are still running Exchange v5.5. Exchange 2010 works-just like Exchange 2007 - only 64-bit Windows Server platforms. This fact prevents the possibility of an in-place upgrade. (Upgrade from the same machine, based on Exchange Server 2003). With this quantum leap, from 32 - to 64-bit is an entirely different memory and database use possible. For example, there can be significantly more database in one-content to be recorded in the RAM cache. This offers the users a much faster display of their mailbox contents on the screen because there is fewer disks I / O needed.

Client-server communication is entirely via the Exchange 2010 Client Access Server handled. This server also introduced in Exchange 2007, takes over the functions of the Exchange 2003 Front-End Server. When Exchange 2007 was still true that only the Outlook (Office) client communicating directly with the Mailbox Server and all clients before the Client Access Server claims; now, in Exchange 2010 runs all communication between clients and servers follow the Client Access Server.

Re: How to run Exchange 2010 alongside Exchange 2003

It is known that MS has offered a document a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 to Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. It will consist of migration of an Exchange 2003 server with mailboxes, public folders, directives and OWA Exchange 2010 server with all the roles (Hub Transport, Client Access, Mailbox and the Exchange Management Tools). If we get an Exchange 2010 organization with separate functions we can use the document as a guide, as each migration is completely different from the rest. Anyway, the first thing to recommend is one of the best things Microsoft has done in this life, a deployment wizard in Exchange 2010 called " Microsoft Exchange Server Deployment Assistant ". Exchange 2003 servers must have Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Exchange 2003 installed as a minimum. If our intention is to install Exchange 2010 on different servers, distributing the roles, the installation order of the roles should be as follows: 1 Client Access or Client Access, 2nd Hub Transport or Hub Transport, 3rd Unified Messaging (UM) or and 4 UM Mailbox or Mailbox.

While going for the installation you have to make sure several things before actually implementing. If it is the first instance of Exchange 2010 which you are going to install on the existing 2003 organization, don’t forget to get Client Access server role installed first as well as Hub Transport server role and Unified Messaging server role in addition to Mailbox server role. The account you use must be delegated membership in the Schema Admins group. For the first installation, the account must have membership in the Enterprise Admins group.
