Re: Novell Netware 6.5 for Linux

One of the main concerns I had with NetWare 6 was the lack of an integrated management utility. Novell has listened to that criticism: NetWare 6.5 contains excellent installation and upgrade wizards and iManager 2.0, a Web-based management tool that gives you complete control over all parts of the NIS and the applications. Netware 6.5 contains features that are attractive to businesses of all sizes. The included applications make it possible to streamline IT management, IT budget to slim down and increase user productivity. The 6.5-release seems an attractive upgrade for those who are already using NetWare. Companies that are considering a move to this OS, it is better to wait until the move to Linux in NetWare 7.0 compatibility increases. Contains the NetWare 6.5 and exteNd Application Server exteNd Workbench, a solution for Web services and other applications to develop and deploy. The exteNd package came in possession of Novell after the acquisition of SilverStream. This software enables J2EE and web application development with a variety of standards.

Re: Novell Netware 6.5 for Linux

The early nineties were the heyday of NetWare; it then had a market share of around 75% for file servers. It was praised by a flexibility, stability and simplicity. Then it went downhill and became the largest market share taken by the Server version of Microsoft Windows. This was mainly due to the fact that Windows is much better able to function as application server than NetWare and thus was more versatile. Moreover, Windows also caught up in the classical benefits of NetWare, as mentioned above and found the Microsoft marketing machine more powerful than that of Novell. NetWare currently plays only a marginal role in the market for operating systems for file servers. In mid 2003, Novell announced that they have all the functionality that is available on NetWare, will also transfers to Linux. This and the acquisition by Novell, a Linux distribution is the survival of NetWare for discussion, although Novell itself vehemently denies that.
