    WAN connection is too slow with Cisco Linksys WRT320N

    Right now I am using a CiscoWRT320N router. It is connected to Comcast cable modem (Motorola SB5101). From yesterday I am noticing very slow Internet connection. I tried resetting the router and at this time I get download speeds of 10+ Mbps but then it slow to about 1 Mbps or less. Sometime I get 300 Kbps. There is firmware update available for my router and I had to use wired connection when it happens. What should I do now?

    I'd say the router is not compatible - it is rather the cable modem is incompatible BW. I tested three 10/100 Mbps Ethernet WAN router and all three have no or inadequate work (less than 4 Mbps WAN). Even an official with Cisco 10/100Mbps Wan did not work.

    It seems to me that the cable works like a big LAN. I.e. in your LAN behind the router that reproduce themselves, the MAC of the PC / laptop once a trial basis clans to another PC / laptop. Then the DHCP is also disturbed in the LAN and the renewal of the IP configuration is not working properly. This means that the DHCP lease runs down completely and manifests itself with a brief separation of all IP connections. This happens in your LAN, depends on the settings from the DHCP server on the LAN.

    Try the following procedure:
    • Turn off all appliances. That all power supplies from the socket,
    • Pull all the LAN cables.
    • Leave it for 5 minutes or more
    • Turn on the modem
    • Wait until ALL LEDs are permanently on
    • Check connection through dial tone on the phone.
    • Plug LAN cable between the modem and the WAN port router
    • Switch on Router
    • Wait until router LEDs are permanently on, only "link" may blink as usual irregular
    • LAN cable to the PC plug
    • Wait for Windows connection to make.
    • Now test Your Internet Connection

    The point is that your Cisco modem with only very few 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports compatible. Kabel BW knows this already - is whether they're working on it any other thing. Auto-negotiation is always advisable.

    I assume that you didn’t try the firmware upgrade.

    Did you check it in Cisco website?

    You need to insert proper model number of router and search for the firmware.

    Did you try flashing the router with the same version firmware?

    Did you try re-configuring all the settings from the Default?

    I have installed the custom firmware DD-WRT V24 SP1. Once installed, I performed the following changes in the router:
    • Wireless -> Advanced Settings -> beacon interval = 75
    • Wireless -> Advanced Settings -> Fragmentation Threshold = 2304
    • Wireless -> Advanced Settings -> RTS threshold = 2304
    • NAT / QoS -> UPnP -> UPnP Service = Deactivate

    After I had done these things, so custom firmware and modifying the above, I had no more trouble from poor connections, poor download speeds and unstable connections.
