How to set Cisco Linksys WRT160N V2 as access point on LAN

I want to set this router as an Access Point outside the building. I don’t need its routing functionality. The LAN IP address is the range 10.*.*.* and subnet 255.0.0.0. I would like to put the access point into this subnet. But the dropdown box only allows me to set using predefined subnet masks and those doesn’t matches with mine one. What can I do now?

    • First of all configure the access point to an unused LAN IP address of a LAN. Make sure that IP address is not used by any device and should not reside inside the DHCP server address pool.
    • Change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.
    • Using WRT disable the DHCP server.
    • Connect WRT LAN port to existing LAN.
    • The wireless is bridged into the Ethernet LAN. There is no use of IP address of the WRT here. The wireless works fine.

I am using E3000 in my case and in this case included wireless router as an access point. You can use them as mere harmless base station: You can configure a static IP address (as an example 192.168.2.20/255.255.255.0) from the address space of the existing router (192.168.2.0 / 24), which is not in the DHCP pool (192.168.2.101 to .150). Then turn off the DHCP server and UPnP from the E3000 and hang him with one of its LAN ports on the cable network, for example, directly to a LAN port on your existing router. The Internet port (WAN), the E3000 will not be used. Making in this setting, the E3000 does not NAT (Network Address Translation), therefore there is no throughput degradation.

We put the old router with the IP 192.168.1.2 (DHCP disabled). We connected both through a network cable. If the routers are very old will have to unite them through a "crossover cable". The modern ones are able to detect the cable automatically. The network configuration of the PCs can make to obtain their IP automatically from router 192.168.1.1 (if you have left the DHCP enabled), or manually setting the IPs from 192.168.1.3. In the latter case, we will put as gateway 192.168.1.1 all. The netmask may be 255.255.255.0 and the DNS will have to enter in your field.

What you are telling can be achievable but there is a slight limitation that you will only have the access of web interface WRT from an IP address (incorrect LAN subnet on the WRT). However if the WRT set to 10.0.11.12/255.255.255.0, in that case WRT is only accessible from IP addresses 10.0.11.*.

We'll have to configure the wireless connection between PCs and the router neutral. It is advisable to establish a good level of security in it. (WPA encryption, MAC address filtering, etc). It's all about. PCs linked by wireless to the router neutral and get their internet through the other.

As far as my recommendation is, you should not use the broadcast IP address of the LAN IP subnet which assigned to the WRT. You should not use it for any other purposes. If the WRT is 10.0.11.12/255.255.255.0, then do not use 10.0.11.255 for any device over your network. You won’t get to know what kind of traffic going on/out to the LAN and it will then lead to issues if there any pc under broadcast address. The only option is to change the LAN subnet mask and perhaps divide the LAN into various routed networks.

I think that it is quite possible to use the router as a single access point... By cons, not to be bothered would be best to disable all firewall functions. Under these conditions, I think it is enough to share the internet connection on the computer with the modem and everything it should work... As for DHCP, it shocks can be a problem with the internet connection sharing, so I do not say bullshit, sharing windows requires that the bike is where the modem is connected to the address 192.168.0., so in these conditions, you just make sure the DHCP distribute addresses 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.10...
