Can't get local area connection connected with my desktop

I brought another computer home, what i got from relatives. When i turned it on then messages on the bottom right corner about local area connection started appearing. When i open the network connections windows then it says acquiring network address. Eventually it stops trying and says network cable unplugged. It worked fine at my relatives place, but not at my place.

    hope you can help

Well, what kind of desktop pc do you have, what is the full computer specifications that you own? Can you go to Run >> type cmd >> and then in the console type ipconfig/release and then again type in ipconfig/renew and see if it refreshes the network, thus resolving the issue of network cable unplugged?

One of the reason could be the network settings.
Since the computer was in use by your relatives, they might have configured the network settings manually. And manual network setting might not match to your home network.
So in this case you need to check for a few things.
You may check the IP address settings by running the IPCONFIG command in the command prompt window. I would suggest you to run the IPCONFIG command on a computer which is already connected to your home network and then on the new computer which is unable to connect. This way you will come to know the difference in the network settings and correct it accordingly.
If you want step by step solution to this issue, please let me know the following:
    1. Which operating system you have in the PC?
    2. Are you using a router? Or a Lan hub or switch?
    3. How many computer you already have on the network?
    4. Do you want to share internet connection or share data or printer etc.
