    LAN client won't re-connect to router

    I could use some advice. Whenever my router is restarted there is one client that won't reconnect. That client is running XP Pro. It has a fixed IP but the problem also exists if it is set to DHCP. Windows thinks it is connected but the client cannot talk to other clients nor the Internet. When I re-boot the PC it connects just fine. If instead I go to CMD and try to release & reset, ipconfig gets hung. Do I need to re-install XP?

    Can you try using the Windows wireless client to make the connection. Also, what is the exact indications when it fails to connect? Have you tried to connect using a cable to the router? You can also try to disable encryption on your router and see if you can connect, that will narrow it down to an encryption or other issue.

    Can you tell us what are results of ifconfig -a - does the card get (valid) IP address? Is this a server (CLI) install - or is it controlled by Network Manager? What is in /etc/network/interfaces? Have you tried to change the ethernet cable to see whether it is a cable fault or not. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation.

    Thank you for your reply and the list of things to check.

    "Can you tell us what are results of ifconfig -a - does the card get (valid) IP address?"

    If you mean "ipconfig -all", here is the result:
    Windows IP Configuration
    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : media
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown

    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller

    fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1
    fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
    fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1

    "Is this a server (CLI) install - or is it controlled by Network Manager?"

    Sorry, I don't understand the question.

    "What is in /etc/network/interfaces? "

    Using Windows Explorer, I did not locate any such directory.

    "Have you tried to change the ethernet cable to see whether it is a cable fault or not."

    Yes. And remember that the client connects right away if I re-boot it. The question is why it won't reconnect on its own after the router re-boots. Other clients do not have this problem.

    "Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager."

    Any items in particular?

    "Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly;"

    I un-installed the motherboard's Ethernet port and let Windows re-install it.

    "there is No IRQ conflict,"

    Checked.

    " and No Ghost installation."

    Sorry, I don't know what that means.

    Re: LAN client won't re-connect to router

    Can you try to follow the below suggestions to solve the ipconfig hanging, and after that try to connect the lan client to router:

    • First of all start a Viftual PC 2007 Virtual Machine running MOSS 2007 w/SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003 SP2.
    • After that open a command prompt and type IPConfig.
    • IPConfig hangs.
    • Break-out of the hung IPConfig command or open a new command window.
    • type net stop mssqlserver
    • type net start mssqlserver

    This resolves the IPConfig hang error and is probably related to a timing issue on boot.
