What are standard benchmark for Web Servers

You should be knowing that a high performance of the website of your own company is the basis for a good online business model. And choosing the right web server is therefore crucial. Therefore I want to gain some information about the benchmarks that can be useful for web servers. So please tell me what are standard benchmark for Web Servers? I know that nothing annoying when browsing the Internet more than websites with long agonizing load times. But still want to be aware of that thing.

A properly sized Web server is thus essential to guarantee even with an assumed maximum number of concurrent users certain response times. The complexity in the choice of applications for running a Web server is high enough, there should be voting for at least the hardware requirements in advance. And this helps the vendor-independent benchmark consortium SPEC with SPECweb2005. The benchmark evaluates the performance of servers in the delivery of Web pages. It will simulate various workload scenarios and real Internet users and tested the requirements for static and dynamic websites. SPECweb2005 is testing a Web server hardware performance combined with the site used software platform. The standardized workloads enables the benchmark objective comparison of the performance of different servers.

The known server vendors to publish their systems for the SPEC Web server performance with SPECweb2005. Make sure the producers on achieving the best results - more power is not in it!! For IT managers who are looking for a new Web server, this means: For servers with high SPECweb2005 results they can rely on high performance hardware. SPECweb2005 by the benchmark consortium SPEC together with AMD, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun developed. The benchmark evaluates the performance of web servers. The performance consists of the hardware together and use the Web server software.

SPECweb2005 emulates "real Internet users" to send a browser requests via a broadband connection to a web server. SPECweb2005 studied in Web servers in three real workloads, the performance of the system. As a measure for the evaluation of Web server performance SPECweb2005 determines the maximum number of users that can be served simultaneously. The following three real workloads through SPECweb2005:
    • SPECweb2005_Banking: By simulating typical encrypted HTTPS requests to an online bank. These include, for example, logon and logoff events, referrals, queries of account balances.
    • SPECweb2005_Ecommerce: Simulation of unencrypted browsing on a shopping site to look for products that look and put in the basket. Over an SSL connection then the sending of an order is simulated.
    • SPECweb2005_Support: On a support site is simulated to download drivers and documentation as well as searches by users.

In all scenarios mentioned above by "Kamran", which consist of dynamic and static pages, the number of simultaneous users are represented by threads that send continuous requests to the server. To simulate a real user behavior, are inserted between the queries of a user waiting times of 5 and 10 seconds. For all workloads calls SPECweb2005 specified response times that may elapse between sending and receiving a maximum of a result. SPECweb2005 required reports these times as Quality of Service criteria (QoS). The results of SPECweb2005 specify how many users of the Web server and a maximum deduction of the QoS criteria can be operated simultaneously. The benchmark is the user number for all three workloads on separately. The total value of SPECweb2005 is composed of the three individual results.

The total value of SPECweb2005 is a measure of the overall performance of a server in use as a Web server. The result of SPECweb2005 is the number of users that the web server can operate simultaneously withholding the QoS criteria. The performance of the Web server is used by the server platform (CPU, memory, system board), the storage subsystem, the network performance and the operating system and Web server software. SPECweb2005 simulate the typical workload Banking via encrypted HTTPS requests to an online bank. These include, for example, logon and logoff events, referrals, queries of account balances. The result of SPECweb2005_Banking is the number of users that the web server can operate simultaneously withholding the QoS criteria.
