    Installation of Network Manager Connections in Ubuntu

    Network Manager is the tool for managing network connections Ubuntu. Its use is the creation and configuration of access to various types of networks (Internet, local area network [LAN], virtual private network [VPN] ...). Network Manager can handle many types of connections (wireline, wireless network [Wi-Fi] phone modem, wireless network, VPN ...). Network Manager can also be used to share a network connection (usually the Internet) to other computers on your LAN.

    Installation :

    Network Manager is installed by default. Ubuntu and Kubuntu, it takes the form of an applet, a small icon in the dashboard. The applet takes different states depending on your connection (connected / not connected, wired / wireless network, etc.).. It is possible that Network Manager is uninstalled on your system, so, among other things, when you install another connection manager network (such as Wicd). To reinstall the Network Manager, install one of the following packages, using your package manager preferred:
    • For Ubuntu: network-manager-gnome;
    • For Kbuntu: plasma-widget-network-management;

    The Network Manager applet is automatically in the notification area of your dashboard. It is through this applet you can manage network connections on your computer. The applet takes different states depending on your connection (connected / not connected, wired / wireless network, etc.).. If the applet does not appear in your dashboard or if it tells you the error message Network Manager is not running ... make sure that the Network Manager service is running. The applet is no longer following the cancellation by mistake:
    1. "Dashboard" = ⇒ "Right Click"
    2. Select "Notification Area" = ⇒ "Add"

    Many times, you observe that connect to a network detected / configured already but it disconnects after sometime. Left clicking on the applet will display the available networks (including wireless networks found in range, if your computer has a wireless adapter enabled). Select the network you want to connect. This menu offers you the opportunity to:
    • establish a connection to a wireless network invisible (which does not broadcast its existence), when your computer is equipped with a transceiver for wireless networks;
    • configure a wireless connection to broadband (cellular network [3G +, 3G, EDGE, EV-DO]), if your computer is connected to your mobile phone (GSM) or a key provided by your mobile service provider Internet;
    • setup the network connections (VPN) to access your corporate network from your home computer or from your laptop when you travel.
    In this menu, you see one or entries Logout. These entries can cut the connection designated. Your computer will ever be more connected to the said network.

    When you are connected to one or more networks, Network Manager can indicate characteristics. To do this, make a right-click the Network Manager applet and select the menu entry information of connections. For each of the active connections, a tab is proposed as the name of the connection. Display tab of your choice for information about the current connection. To configure networks, whether adding new systems or modification of existing networks, make a right-click the Network Manager applet and select the menu entry Modifying Connections.
    • To add a new connection, first open the tab for the connection type to create (wired, wireless, mobile connection, VPN or DSL). Then press the Add button: an interface allows you to enter information about your network connection. Enter the details of your new connection, and then press the Apply button to add your new connection to the list of those available;
    • To modify an existing connection, first open the tab for the connection type to create (wired, wireless, mobile connection, VPN or DSL). Then press the Edit button: an interface identical to that of adding a new connection opens, but with some fields pre-filled information. Edit the information you want, then press the Apply button for the changes to take effect.

    To connect to your LAN or the Internet, your computer must have an IP address. The IP address is a unique numerical identifier that identifies your computer from all other computers on your network or Internet. The assignment of this unique IP address can occur in several ways, the most common configuration is automatic when establishing the connection to the desired network, a server sends to your computer's unique IP address. To set up a connection automatically receive an IP address (when creating a new connection or altering an existing connection):
    1. Go to the Settings tab of the IPv4 interface for managing your connection;
    2. In the field Connection name, enter a unique name for your significant connection;
    3. In the Method drop-down menu, choose the method Automatic (DHCP);
    4. Press the Apply button to apply the change ....

    You can manually set the IP address assigned to your computer. This is particularly useful for servers that must constantly remain contactable at the same address for all customers. Manual configuration of IP addresses can also increase the security of your LAN. However, this setting is more complex, difficult to maintain and long to be applied to a large infrastructure. You should leave this task to a network administrator. To set up a connection to have a fixed IP address (when creating a new connection or altering an existing connection):
    1. Go to the Settings tab of the IPv4 interface for managing your connection;
    2. In the field Connection name, enter a unique name for your significant connection;
    3. In the Method drop-down menu, choose the manual method;
    4. To the right of executive addresses, press the Add button;
    5. Under Address, enter the IP address, subnet mask, and (incidentally) the default gateway to be used by your connection;
    6. In the DNS Servers field, enter the email address of DNS servers that must use your connection. Separate multiple addresses with a comma;
    7. In the Domain field of search, enter the area where your connection should automatically find addresses, if that is the case;
    8. Press the Apply button to apply changes ....
