Internet connection failure due to 192.168.1.1 medium risk

I have got a Lenovo laptop with a widows xp professional operating system. I connect my laptop to internet through a basic modem at my home, but in my office i have setup a wireless connection. But since I have installed Norton anti virus , my internet services slow down and gradually it stops. But when I connect it in the wireless setup it works fine. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with the my system?

As you mentioned the IP address which your router is assigned is 192.168.1.1 which is an IP address of a Linksys Router. These routers for typical home users are designed in such a way that whenever these routers are powered on for the first time they will use the default IP address and is local or a private address for the home users or local network and therefore is called a default gateway. Therefore a default IP address of a linksys router is 192.168.1.1. The linksys router will obtain a global or public IP address only when it connects to the internet.

It sounds strange that your laptop connects to the internet in your office but does not connect in your house when you connect it through a basic modem. I think you should make the changes to default settings, go to internet options , then to Advanced and change the current settings to default settings. And sometime we miss out simple things. You mentioned that you have a wireless setup configured in your office but not in your house. So first of all things check the Ethernet cables, swap with some other cables, it may also possible that the cables are faulty.

According to me your router is not cloning the MAC address properly.

You can follow the below given instructions to configure the MAC Address feature:
    • Open any browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address field.
    • You will see a dialog box where you will have to enter Admin user name and password.
    • In the default routers the user name is blank and the password is admin.
    • Click on the MAC address clone.
    • Enable the MAC Address feature.
    • Then enter the MAC Address that is registered with your ISP in the user defined data entry field.
    • Click on the option "PC's MAC Address".
    • Save the settings.
