I have two web servers connected to the Internet, and I need to setup a private network between them so I can share files between the boxes. For security reasons I don’t want to do this over the Internet facing NICs.
I have installed an additional NIC in each box and connected them with a cross over cable. One machine is running Windows Server 2003 and the other Windows Server 2008.
I setup the additional NIC in each box as follows:
Windows Server 2008 Box:
IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: blank
DNS Servers: blank
Windows Server 2003 Box:
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: blank
DNS Servers: blank
I have a couple of questions:
1. The Windows Server 2008 box can ping the 2003 box, but the Windows Server 2003 box cannot ping the Windows Server 2008 box. What could be wrong?
2. The Windows Server 2008 box shows this second network as a “Public Network”. How can I make it a “Work Network?” The first NIC has a link to change the network type, so I can change it for the Internet facing NIC. On the second NIC this link is not active.
3. How can I let Windows know that I want to share files over this network as opposed to my Internet facing network?
I don’t need anything fancy like a domain controller or print servers. I simply want to be able to copy files back and forth between the boxes.
Thanks for your help,
RJSO
