Can't get into http:/192.168.1.1 to open ports

I want to play games online and for that I need to do port forwarding and for that I want to open ports. But when I try to access my router's page I get the message saying connection timed out. I don't get the login box which I usually get in normal circumstances. I tried to refer to the manual but that too didn't helped me either. Is there anyone who can help me out in this matter?

First open Internet Explorer, then Tools, Internet Options, Connections, and then LAN settings. Now uncheck all the options. Now try to visit router's page by typing 192.168.1.1 on IE browser. If this doesn't work then, you will be able to see a small reset button at the back of the router (or somewhere at the bottom). Press and hold it for at least 10 seconds and then release it. Now your router is back to its defaults.

How are you connected to the router? Make sure you have a wire directly connecting the router with the PC and nothing else should be in between. Now click on Start, Run and type "cmd". This opens up the command prompt. Now type "ipconfig/all". In the address bar type the IP address you got for default gateway above for the router e.g. 192.168.1.1 and press ENTER. This will bring the login box asking for the username and password. If you are unsure about this then refer to the manual, provided you didn't change it during the configuration. Otherwise you need to reset the router in order to get the access.

As you said you are getting the connection time out message, then that certainly means you need to first check the cabling if it is properly connected. Also try to ping "127.0.0.1" and see if you get 100% response. This will prove if your NIC is working properly. Make sure you can ping 192.168.1.1. If these things doesn't work then try to visit manufacturer's site to upgrade firmware.

I have used Linksys router which has the same IP address to access the router's page. But honestly speaking I do not understand why you are having connection problem since as you mentioned you are neither having any hardware problem nor any kind of misconfiguration. Did you tried connecting the router to another computer via an Ethernet cable?
