DSL Modem won't assign router an IP address

Hello there, I am facing a weird problem with the network. I have a Verizon Westel 6110F bridge modem which is connected to a Dlink 614+ wireless router. The internet was working fine for all these days but now the computer is not able to access Internet. The modem is not assigning any IP address to the router. Therefore if anybody knows why my DSL Modem won't assign router an IP address then it would be really helpful. The operating system on all the computers is Windows XP. Any help is highly appreciated.

Sometimes the configuration of the router changes when any device is connected or disconnected to the network. If the configuration of the router changes then no device will be able to connect to the router. To check the configuration of the router, login to the router using the default IP address of the router. Open the configuration page and check if the router is configured properly or not. If there are any changes to be made, do it and save the settings. Reboot the router

Have you installed any security software on the computer? If yes then it could be the reason why you are not able to access Internet. Security software's have the tendency to block all the unknown traffic which is terminating on the computer. Due to this tendency sometimes the traffic desired by the user is also blocked. Hence try and disable the security software which is installed and then check if the Internet is available on the laptop or not.

Re: DSL Modem won't assign router an IP address

In which mode the modem is working? The modem will not be able to assign IP address to the router if it is working in bridged mode. In bridged mode, the DHCP on the modem is disabled. DHCP is responsible for assigning IP address to all the devices which are connected. Hence as the DHCP on the modem is not working, it will not assign the IP address to the router. Therefore check the mode of the modem and change the mode if required.

I think you will have to update the firmware on the modem. For the modem to work properly the firmware of the modem should work properly. Firmware is the operating system of the modem. If the firmware of the modem is not working properly then you will face such problems. Therefore connect the modem to the computer using the console cable and go to the official website of the manufacturer of the modem. Download the latest firmware which is available for the model of the router which you are using. Install the firmware update and then check if the modem is working properly.

Trying doing a full power cycle of all the devices which are connected on the network. Shutdown all the devices and then power on the devices in the order as follows Modem---Router---Computer. Once the modem is powered on, wait till it stabilizes and then power on the router and let it stabilize. Once both the router and modem stabilizes, turn on the computer. Now check if the Internet can be accessed or not.

Re: DSL Modem won't assign router an IP address

The ISP must have blocked the Mac address of the router and hence it is not receiving any IP address. Many of the ISP's track the MAC address of all the devices which are connected to it. Tracking of MAC address helps the ISP to differ services to all the devices which are connected to its network. Hence I would suggest that you contact your ISP and check if the router is blocked or not.
