angry Linksys WRT160n Setup With Static Ip

Hi everyone. I purchased a WRT160n Linksys router because our ISP has a static address. I've pulled up the webpage (192.168.1.1) and tried to set up as a static ip. It accepts the changes and then just hangs. I'm running Vista 64-bit. I enabled DHCP and started the first address at 192.168.1.100

    Static ip: 192.168.1.15
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.20
    DNS: 205.171.3.65; 205.171.2.65

I set the router IP to 192.168.2.1. It accepts and then hangs. When I try to go to a new tab in the browser and pull up 192.168.2.1, it won't connect.

I set the router IP to 192.168.1.2 and it gives error "router ip equals subnet mask".

So then I tried the install software which doesn't even GET to the IP settings page. It hangs at the page where you connect the power cord, even tho it's plugged.

I tried swapping out the Cat5 cables to make sure that isn't the problem. The router will power on and I can get to the web page. I'm having to reset the router to get to the web page to try again.

Any ideas what I should try?

According to me there is some problem with the Router and hence I will suggest that you get it checked by some technician. If the router is good then it is possible that you are not configuring the router properly. Get the proper configuration settings for the router from the ISP and configure the router.

Hi Milton, I think it may be the router but this router is supposed to be able to use static IP addresses. That why I purchased it. I do have the correct static ip addresses; I kept them printed out and in a file for the ISP. I'm hoping that someone can find something wrong with the router IP or subnet I'm entering.

I think you need to contact the internet provider about this problem which you are facing and ask them about the solution for your problem. As i know that this problem is with the settings of your internet connection, so it will be better to contact to the service provider and i am sure that they will help you out.

Just give a try for dynamic ip address. Many times this works. Usually the router does not hangs on Static IP. This IP's are assigned by the ISP where it connection remain all time active. There might be some issue with the route configuration. Just add the static ip on the router settings and reboot your system. Check in Device Manager about your router status and then in cmd hit ipconfig /release. Ping the site and check the status.
