    Another Wireless conectivity problem (R100)

I have a Toshiba Portege R100 which is installed with Windows XP Service pack 3 operating system. The laptop is connected to a Linksys wireless router which is configured to share connection with 2 other computers. The problem is that my Toshiba Portege R100 gets disconnected from the network frequently. The wireless connectivity only lasts for about 15 minutes. I cant figure out what is causing such problem and hence need your help in solving the issue. Please suggest some steps as in to prevent frequent disconnection from the wireless network. Thanks in advance.

Check if the drivers for the network adapter are installed and working properly. The devices which are connected to the computer, require some drivers to be installed on the computer. The drivers which are installed work as the mediators between the operating system and the device. If the appropriate drivers are not installed then the device will not work properly. To check if the appropriate drivers are installed and working on the computer, go to device manager and highlight the network adapter. If there are any caution signs, the follow the troubleshooting procedure. If the troubleshooting does not help, then try and update the drivers. See if it helps.

As the laptop is getting disconnected from the network and as the connection is shared between the computer, I would suggest that check if there is any IP duplication happening on the network. If there exists duplicate IP's on the network then the computers which are having duplicate IP's will get disconnected from the network. Check the configuration of all the computers which are sharing the connection. Change the IP address of all the computers and then see if the problem persists.

There is a high possibility that the system is infected by some kind of virus which is creating such problems while surfing. Most of the virus tend to get linked with the system files or with the files of the application which are frequently used. If such a situation occurs then some features of the operating system will not work. Therefore scan the system with an updated antivirus and check all the files which are infected. Repair or quarantine the files which are infected. After repairing all the files which are infected, see if the wireless network works properly or not.

The network card is responsible for establishing and maintaining the connectivity to the network. Hence if the network interface card is faulty then the user will face some problems while accessing the network. There is a software test port which is configured for testing of the network card. To check the network card, click on start and select run. Now type "ping 127.0.0.1" in the run tab and hit enter. Ideally there should not be any errors in data sent and received. If there are any errors in data sent or received, the network card is faulty and needs to be replaced.

I suspect that the router is not configured properly to share the internet connection between the computers and hence you are facing such disconnection issues with it. If the router is not configured properly then the devices which are connected to it will not be able to access all the resources of the network and hence disconnection will occur. Login to the router and open the configuration page, check if the router is configured according to the settings provided by the ISP. If there are any changes to be made, do it and then save the settings. Reboot the router and see if the problem persists or not.
