    Identify Linux machine on LAN

    Hello,

    Here are some details

    - I have a distro of Knoppix installed on a partition on my hard drive - Distrib. Debian-based (on another partition I Win2000)
    - No DHCP server on the LAN (managed by NT technology)
    - So I configured using netcardconfig my ethernet card and it crashes at the gateway routing
    - The following command (as root) reproduces exactly the crash:
How to recognize a Linux machine in a network environment WinNT? If you have any idea regarding this then please let me know. Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Could you give your ip address and netmask on your local network, as well as those of the bridge and one of your colleagues that you ping? As your file resolf.conf. A prior, this has nothing to do with a network "NT" or not. The IP protocol has been precisely to avoid creating this kind of problem. I guess you have understood what I am trying to say.

    Hello,
I do have a similar kind of a problem.
    The netmask is: 255.255.255.0
For other addresses (my IP, DNS and gateway that ...) I do not communicate publicly
For cons, I can add is that:
    - When I am under W2000, the ping is OK <adr>
    - I picked addresses (3 DNS, gateway) in the "Properties" tab of TCP / IP parametrization Windows 2000. Moreover, compared to your remarks, it seems that ICMP packets to meet a lot of resources to a router. For security reasons it is possible to prevent the router to respond to ICMP packets. Any help regarding this is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Communicate fps machine private network (remember I grieve for private classes) will not allow us to come and do some nasty things to the machine (well I guess it is for this that you do not want to mess with) Incidentally I will try to do something similar on my network so I await the resolution of the problem forward. I hope the information is helpful to you.

Re: Identify Linux machine on LAN

    Hello,
Here is the solution for your problem.

    1) I tried to add my own as gateway IP_adresse:
    Code:
    route add default gw <IP_add>
    2) then I added the gateway of my LAN:
    Code:
    route add default gw <adr>
and there, nice, no more error message like "SIOCADDRT: the network is not accessible"

    3) finally (optional?) I deleted my 1st Gateway:
    Code:
    route del default gw <addr>
Now, I can ping the gateway of my LAN without having the message "sendto: Network is unreachable".

Re: Identify Linux machine on LAN

    Hello,
Ping and Traceroute generate unwanted traffic and often admins prefer to transfer the response to requests from the category ICMP. Now if I understand you can ping the machines being part of the network "private" but not www.google.com thus the last of your router box ( the router connected to the modem ISP) rejects the incoming ICMP (Internet to network private). I guess you have understood what I am trying to say here.
