In my office I want to implement a new router. My old router is not working properly. I have to use a wireless router now in the page of old one. Here I am planning to first go through the services and specification of the router for better protection to secure the internet connection. What you suggest for buying the same especially for protection basis.

Here are some characteristics presents by the router. First of all the User interface is simple to utilize, instructiveness, simplicity, superiority of online help and written certification. The numbers of protocol supported by it are Dynamic DNS maintain which you can see at dyndns.org (for illustration) for a explanation of this service, which is indispensable if you intend making servers observable to the Internet and IP address translation: NAT and SUA for incoming traffic.

An adsl router also supports DNS proxy for performance and DHCP server for LAN side addressing. The inbuilt security provides you Port filtering incoming and outgoing, by IP address, port, or network interface. Specification of ports and IP addresses by range and lists and State based filtering of protocols like FTP which use dynamic ports.

Some router also gives you Content filtering HTTP that scan JavaScript, ActiveX, VBscript, Java or cookies be optionally blocked per site/domain/IP range/completely. Content filtering Email supports which can dangerous attachments be filtered in POP or SMTP email and IPsec VPN. But all this need advance configuration information. Read the router manual for the specification.

Some router provides effectiveness of intrusion detection like few false positives where it gives you accuracy of detection and alerting. It gives you protection from well known trojans and backdoors recognized and alerts generated. It alerts you of dangerous attacks (via email or other methods). Check out also that your router also have local and remote loggings (via syslog) of passed or blocked packets by default, or on a per rule basis.

Re: Security features of a ADSL firewall

It entirely depends on your choice to buy a router. You must take router which can help you to fix the action again threats. Like discovering attackers, blocking of attacks supported (possibly automatically, and even in real-time), Serial, telnet, GUI, Web, other. A serial interface is very helpful if you formulate an error with your LAN address arrangement, etc. It will add on if you get extensive troubleshooting tools on the similar.
