By evasion, most Windows installations are configured to hide file extensions for recognized file types. This is not superior, for the reason that the client is not educated as to what type of file he/she is regarding to perform, apart from the icon connected with the file which does not tell much regarding any troubles that might be with the file.

An attacker can prefer to send the client an email containing a customized filename. For illustration a worm might be emailing you a file attached to your message, named 'LOVE-LETTER.TXT.vbs'. If hidden file extensions selection is facilitated, the .vbs extension will be hidden in this situation, and if the client takes for granted that the file is an undisruptive text file and endeavor to open it, what occurs is that the worm is being completed as an alternative and the system is already contaminated.
