First check if the router is configured properly. If the router is not configured properly then the all the devices which are connected to the router will not be able to access all the network resources. To check if the router is configured properly or not, login to the router and check the configuration page of the router. The default IP address of the router can be found out by referring user manual of the router. Enter the default IP address of the router in the address bar and hit enter. Open the configuration page and then contact the ISP to get the proper settings. Check if the router is configured properly as per the settings provided by the ISP. If there are any changes to be made, do the changes and save the configuration.

Check if the drivers for the network adapter are installed and working properly on the computer. All the devices which are connected to the computer require a set of drivers to be installed on the computer. If the appropriate drivers are not installed then the device will not work properly. To check if the drivers for the network adapter are installed and working properly, right click on my computer and then select Device manager. Click on Network adapter and then see if there are any caution signs. Follow the troubleshooting procedure if there are any caution sings. If the troubleshooting does not help then try and update the drivers.

All the routers work on the software known as algorithm. If the algorithm of the router is not advanced then it wont be able to handle more devices connected to it. If the router is not able to handle more devices connected to it then the devices will not be able to connect to the router. To solve such problem you will have to update the firmware of the router. To update the firmware of the router, connect the router to one of the computer using the console cable. Go to the official website of the manufacturer of the router and download the latest firmware which is available for the model of the router. Install it on the router and then check if you are able to connect the computer to the router.

Re: Desktop running on Windows 7 cannot connect to Wireless router

The default IP version of Windows 7 is IPv6 while the default IP version of Windows Xp is IPv4. Therefore if two computers installed with these operating system are connected on the same network then there would be protocol mismatch due to which the network may not work properly. You will have to disable the IPv6 support of Windows 7 so that you will be able to connect both the computers on the network. To disable the IPv6 support, open the network connection and then go to TCP/IP properties. Remove the check mark against "Enable IPv6 support" and apply the settings. Now restart the computer and check if you are able to connect to the router.
