I think you should keep your firewall always ON as it is the only security feature given in the windows operating system which can detect any kind of malicious bits that comes to your computer. So if you do not have any software to secure your computer then at least firewall would be stopping all those viruses which can harm your computer. Go to the Network And Security to enable the firewall on XP Operating system.

Do not worry, i have given you the link by which you can download the Avast Anti Virus which is great tool to secure the windows operating system. You may have to keep on updating this software in order to keep it running even for latest viruses. And if you use firewall to secure your windows then you must keep ON the automatic updates for windows.

One thing you can do if you do not have anti virus software is scan your computer online. By doing this you would find it that where and which file has been infected so that you can delete it manually. Once you have deleted the infected file that does not mean that your computer is not infected now as you have to kill all the processes related to the particular virus and have to change all those registry values which has been changed by that virus.

Hazard Shield would be a nice software to secure your Windows XP system as it has a huge database about the viruses including all the latest one. Click on the name of the Hazard Shield to download it. Clicking on this will redirects you to the web page from where you will be just one step away to get Hazard Shield.

It may happen that the version of the anti virus software which you are using to control the security of your computer system is expired or it would be a trial version which results in the failure of removal of any viruses. I think you should keep on updating the version of whatever software you use to secure your computer so that it can handle new kind of malwares.
