All versions and description of OS X till 10.4 (Tiger) have incorporated a Unix-based firewall which is called as ipfw. In sanctuary parlance, ipfw is a packet-filtering firewall: it verify and ensure every packet approaching or departing through the Mac’s network interfaces beside a set of rules, and permits it to pass or obstruct it. Packet-filtering firewalls like ipfw organize network traffic on two methods: by type, using port numbers, and by origin and intention, using IP addresses.

For example, a packet-filtering firewall might recognize file-sharing correlation from IP addresses of your effort to the network but not from additional addresses on the Internet. To ipfw, Leopard adds a innovative socket-filter firewall (also known as an submission of firewall). Slightly than using network ports and IP addresses to make a decision whether to permit a packet, it bases its evaluation on the application making the network application.

When an agenda inquire or request to recognize network traffic, socket filters verify and ensure a record of agenda that have been certified to do so. If the program is on the register or directory, the firewall permits the correlation. If the program is not on the register or directory —as in the case of innovative or upgraded software—OS X asks you whether to permit the program to recognize incoming traffic.

The sanctuary favorite pane lets you arrange the OS X’s built-in socket-filter firewall, which helps to filters network traffic by submission. You facilitate Leopard’s socket firewall by choosing Set right of entry for Specific Services and submissions in the Firewall tab of the sanctuary favorite pane. When you choose that alternative, you will see a list of allowable and uncreative programs. If you would like to stop all supplementary traffic, you can choose Allow Only Essential Services, but be careful: doing so will break a number of applications.
