First check that the cable or DSL modem has a light or an "waiting" ( "standby"). Some well known modems do not connect to the Internet when in standby. If this is your case, make sure the modem is not in standby mode. Other indicator lights can provide useful information about cable connections. An indicator called the "Cable" or "Online", for example, indicates whether the provider network is available. An indicator "PC" or "link" indicates whether the hardware connection between the computer and the modem is correct. An indicator of link (link) is almost always a positive sign that the Ethernet ports on each device function properly, it would be very unlikely that the problem was due to failure of the Ethernet ports.

Set up a computer to connect to the Internet directly, without the base station. Connect directly to the Internet without the AirPort base station.
If the connection is not good, check it is correctly configured. For Mac OS X 10.3 or later, click the Wizard button in Network preferences. For earlier versions, see Mac OS X: Connect to the Internet, troubleshoot your Internet connection and set up a small network. If you successfully connect, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the computer and connect to the base station. Connect to the network base station and use the AirPort Setup Assistant or AirPort Utility to reconfigure it.

To solve your problem, find the assistants, switch to the Finder and press the keyboard shortcut Command-F. Thus opens Sherlock in Mac OS 9 to 10.1.5. In Mac OS X 10.2 or later is the search dialog in the Finder. If you can not connect without the base station, double-check your Internet settings. If necessary, contact your Internet service provider.

Try replacing the Ethernet cable. If not, then you will need a third Ethernet device to check whether the computer or the modem fails to establish the link. The third device may be a simple Ethernet hub ( "test") that has binding indicators (any economic 10BASE-T hub will suffice), an Ethernet switch with link indicators, another computer, a router or wireless base station.

Make sure that the software settings are correct, as described in section Check the settings of the Network preferences. If you still can not connect, there may be a DNS issue. The DNS service provider's Internet services may not function or may not be configured correctly. If you still can connect and link light cable modem is positive, and if you have not replaced the Ethernet cable, replace it with a new cable or a cable that works properly.
