What is local only connection in router?

Hello there, I am facing a very unusual problem with my computer. I have one desktop computer and one laptop running on Windows Xp and Windows vista respectively. I share the same Internet connection on both the computer using a Belkin F5D9230-4 router which has wireless capability. The desktop computer is connected to router directly using wired connection while the laptop is connected using Wireless connection. The computer which is connected to the router directly can access the Internet but the computer which is connected using wireless shows Local only connection. Therefore I want to know what is Local only connection in router?

Whenever the connection between the computer and the router is not proper, proper communication between them will not occur. If the communication between the router and the computer is not proper, the data will not be transferred properly. To avoid this situation, whenever the router cannot communicate with the computer properly, the computer displays Limited connectivity or Local only connection to avoid the loss of data. Hence Limited connectivity and Local only connection are one and the same.

Check if the router is configured properly or not. If the router is not configured properly then the devices which connect to the router will not be able to access all the resources of the network. If the device is not allowed to access all the resources of the network, then it will display "Local only connection" in the connection tab. To check the configuration of the router, you will have to log in to the router and check the configuration manually. If there are any changes to be made in the configuration, do it and then save the changes. Once the changes are saved, reboot the router.

I think the ISP which you are using is not allowing sharing of the connection between two computers. Many of the ISP's do not allow the sharing of same connection between multiple computers. If the sharing of the connection is not allowed from the ISP end then any hardware implemented for sharing the connection at the user end will not be helpful. ISP's track the MAC address of all the devices that are connected to the network. Tracking the MAC addresses helps the ISP in differing the services to different users. Hence first check if the ISP allows the sharing of connection and then implement hardware solutions for the same.

As you are connecting two computers which are running on two different operating systems on the same network, you will have to disable certain features of Windows Vista. Disable the IP Helper service of Windows vista and then see if you are able to access Internet on the laptop or not. Follow the steps below to Disable IP helper.

    • Click on Start and type in "services.msc" in the run tab.
    • Local IP Helper service at the bottom and then right click on it and select Properties
    • In the dropdown box select the option Disabled and then Apply the settings.
    • Click on Stop button to stop the services.
    • Click OK to exit the dialog

The Default IP version of Windows vista is version 6 which has 128 bit IP address. The DHCP of the router assigns 32 bit IP address to the computer. Hence the computer is not able to connect to the router. Disable the IPv6 support of Windows Vista and then try to connect to the router again. To disable the IPv6 support of Windows vista, open the LAN properties and go to TCP/IP properties. Remove the check mark against use "IPv6" and then save the settings. Hope it works.
