| Wireless not working in Compaq Presario F500
Hello, My Compaq Presario F500 has the following configuration,2GB RAM, 80GB Hard disk drive and is installed with Windows Vista. The laptop has a built-in wireless adapter which is not working when I try to connect it to the Wireless router at my home. The Wireless router which I use is Dlink. The router is connected to my desktop computer which is installed with Windows XP. I cant figure why I am not able to connect to the router using my laptop. So if anybody is facing Wireless adapter issues in Compaq Presario F500, please share some information which might help me in solving the issue. |

I think the wireless capability of the router is not enabled and hence you are not able to connect to the router. The Wireless capability of the Wireless router is disabled. I suppose that the desktop computer is connected to the router using Wired connection and hence the Wireless on the router must be disabled. To check if the Wireless is working on the router, see if the Wlan LED on the router is glowing. If it is not glowing, then login to the router and open the configuration page. Go to the Wireless section and then enable the Wireless. Select appropriate Encryption, Authentication password and SSID and then save the settings. Reboot the router and then see if you are able to connect to the router. |

Check the drivers for the Wireless adapter on the computers. Every device connected to the computer requires supporting drivers to be installed on the computer. Drivers acts as a mediator between the operating system and the device. If the drivers are not installed then the device associated to it will not function properly. To check if the drivers for the Wireless adapter are installed and working properly on the computer, go to device manager and then find Wireless network adapter. If there are any caution signs check then follow the troubleshooting procedure. After troubleshooting try and update the drivers. |

Compaq laptops come with an application known as HP Wireless Assistant which helps in establishing the connection with the wireless network. Open this application and then try to connect to the available network. If this application is not installed on the laptop, download it and install it on the laptop. The application will also be present on the install disks which are provided with the laptop. After installing the application there will be no problem while connecting the laptop to the wireless router.

The possible problem with your laptop could be the Network Interface card. If the network interface card on the laptop is not working properly then the Laptop will not be able to connect to the available networks. Every NIC comes with a software testing port which can be used to check the Network Interface card. The default IP address of this software testing port is 127.0.0.0. This address is known as loop back address. In the command prompt, type "ping 127.0.0.0" and hit enter. Now the system will display the packets sent and received by the NIC. There should be no error in packet sent and received. If there are any errors then the NIC is faulty and needs to be replaced.

| Re: Wireless not working in Compaq Presario F500
When any device connects to the router using Wireless connection, it is assigned an IP address by the DHCP which is running on the router. If the DHCP on the router is having some problems then it would not assign any IP address to the device connected and hence the device will not be able to access the network resources. Check if the DHCP on the router is working properly. Connect the router to the computer using a Console cable and then disable the DHCP. Once the DHCP is disabled you will be logged out of the router. Login again and enable the DHCP again and then see if you are able to connect the computer to the router or not. |
