Self assigned IP address in Macbook

I have been using Mac systems for a long time now but have not faced such problems in it. I have recently bought a Macbook which had Mac OS X 10.5 on it. I used to connect the Macbook to Internet using Wireless connection to the Linksys router. I upgraded the operating system on the Macbook to Mac OS X 10.6.2 but after upgradation the Macbook is not able to connect to Internet through Wireless router. Whenever I turn on the Wifi the system shows Self assigned IP address. I dont know what does Self assigned IP address in Macbook means and hence need your help. Is this some kind of hardware failure or Is this some kind of software failure? Please help.

I think the operating system upgrade which you have done on the Macbook must have altered the files which are used while establishing the connection to the Wireless router and hence you are not able to access the Internet from your Macbook. If you have the Install disk of the operating system which you were previously using then insert it and boot the system from the disk. Install the operating system which you were previously using by using the Install/Archive mode. Install/ Archive mode helps in using the applications which are installed on the previous operating system. Once the operating system is changed try connecting to Internet again.

Check if the drivers for the network adapter are installed and working properly on the Macbook. If the drivers of the particular devices are not installed then the device will not work properly. Hence to make a peripheral connected to the computer work properly it is very important that correct drivers for the device are installed on the computer. Also try and download the latest available drivers for the network adapter for the operating system which you are using. Updating the drivers will solve the issue.

The network preferences of the Macbook are not transferred properly whenever operating system upgrade is carried out. Due to this the preferences of the user which were configured in the previous operating system are lost when operating system on the Mac system is upgraded. Hence the user has to do all the settings again if he wants to access the Internet on the computer again. Open the System preferences and then select the Network preferences. Go to the Advanced Tab and then do the settings which are required for the Macbook to get online. Once all the settings are done, save the settings and then reboot the system.

The Macbook is not able to see the Wireless router and hence it is assigning IP address to itself. All Mac systems assign an IP address to themselves if they are not able to see any device in the network. The possible problem can be with the Airport card of the Macbook. Airport card on the Macbook is not integrated on the logic board but mounter on it and then connected to the logic board using connecting cable. If the connecting cable is not fixed properly then the Airport card will not properly. Open the Macbook and check if the cable is connected properly. If the cable is connected properly then the Airport card is faulty and needs to be replaced.

The DHCP running on the Wireless router is responsible for assigning IP addresses to all the devices which are connected to it using Wireless connections. If the DHCP is not working properly and if it is not able to assign the IP address to the device then the Mac device will assign self IP address. This is to prevent the computer from connecting to any unreliable network. Therefore check if the DHCP on the router is working properly or not. To check if the DHCP is working properly or not, you will have to login to the router and then go to the configuration page. In the configuration page disable the DHCP. After Disabling the DHCP you will not be able to access the router again using LAN cable. Hence be sure that you have a console cable to access the router again to enable the DHCP. After re-enabling the DHCP, save the configuration and then reboot the router. Now you will be able to connect the Macbook to the router and access the Internet without any problems.
