How to use Dlink router as Wireless access point?

Sponsored Links
Hello friends, I am really new to networking and hence need your help in implementing this network setup. I have two Wireless routers, 1 is Belkin Wireless router and other is DLink DIR 655 wireless router. Currently all the computers are connected to Belkin wireless router using Wifi. I need to extend this network from one building to other. The signal of Belkin router is not strong enough in the second building and hence frequent disconnection occurs. Thats why I have bought Dlink router to extend the network but I dont know how to implement it exactly. So if anybody knows How to use Dlink router as Wireless access point, then please let me know. Also are there any other alternatives to extend the wireless network. Any help is highly appreciated.

Instead of extending the network with two different routers you can create two different wireless networks so that there is no interference between the two networks. If two different routers are used to extend the same network then there are high chances of Interference of the signals of the two routers which may lead to the devices getting disconnected frequently. Hence to avoid this you can create two different networks by using two different router so that you will be able to use both the networks without any interference problems.

If you can find the cable long enough to connect the two routers then it would be easy to extend the same network using the two different routers. Connect the two routers using an ethernet CAT 5 cable. Remember to take a Cross cable to connect two routers. Once the two routers are connected using the cable. Login to the Dlink Router and then configure the router according to your need. Keep the SSID of the two routers same. The only problem you will be facing is that you will have to connect to the network manually when you move from one building to the other.

You can use access points to extend the network instead of using a Wireless router. Access points can be connected to each other without connecting wires. This feature of the Access points is called Meshing. You can configure the access points to work on the same SSID which will let you to stay connected as you move between two buildings. To implement this type of network, you will have to buy Access points depending on the need of the network. Connect one Access point to the wireless router and then connect the subsequent access points with each other by implementing Meshing. You will have to login to each and every access points to change the SSID.

Even the routers can be configured to use the same SSID so that the network does not get disconnected when the user in between the buildings. There is a possibility of Interference of the signal but if the Routers are configured to transmit on two different frequencies then they can use the same SSID. If the SSID's are same then when the User moves from one building to other, the computer will search for the network and will maintain connection with the router whose signal is strong. Hope this post helps.

Instead of using the Two different routers and access points, you can use the Cisco routers which can be used as the access points. This will reduce the cost of the network as the devices used will be reduced. Also the Range and connectivity of the Cisco router is good than the DLINK router. You can use the Linksys Cisco WAP 610N which can act as a router as well as access point.
