Dell laptop Cannot connect to Actiontec router

I have a Dell laptop which is installed with Windows XP operating system. I have a small home network configured which has 2 more computers connected to the Actiontec router. The problem is Dell laptop cannot connect to Actiontec router using Wireless connectivity. I tried to connect the laptop to the network many times but it does not connect. I cant figure out why and hence need your help and guidance in solving the issue. Is this because of some hardware failure? Please suggest some solutions.

Re: Dell laptop Cannot connect to Actiontec router

First check the configuration of the network to which you are trying to connect the laptop to. Probably the network is configured only to connect two computers in it and hence it is not allowing the third computer to join the network. Check the configuration and see if the network is configured to connect more than two computers. If not then configure the network again to allow more computers to join and then try connecting the laptop to the network. Changing the configuration will surely let you allow to connect the laptop to the network.

Re: Dell laptop Cannot connect to Actiontec router

I think the DHCP server is not running on the router and is creating problems while connecting the laptop to the network. DHCP server is responsible for assigning the IP address to the device which get connected to the router using wireless connection. Whenever a device connects to the router using wireless connection the DHCP server assigns the IP address from the pool of the addresses to the device which is connected. To enable DHCP on the router, log in to the router and then enable the DHCP on the router. The default IP address of the router can be found out by referring the user manual of the router. Enter the default IP of the router in the address bar of the browser to log in to the router.

Re: Dell laptop Cannot connect to Actiontec router

Try connecting the Laptop to the router using the Hard wired method. To connect the laptop to the router using wired connection, take a CAT 5 ethernet straight cable. Connect one end of the cable to the laptop and another to the router. Now configure the laptop according to the other computers on the network. Go to TCP/IP utilities in the laptop and then select properties. Now select "Use the following IP address" and then enter the IP address which belongs to same subnet as of the other computers on the network. The IP address of the router should be entered in the default gateway address and then configure the DNS server same as the other computers on the network. Once all this settings are done the laptop will be connected to the network.

I would suggest you to check the Network Interface card of the laptop as I suspect that the NIC is faulty. If the network card is faulty then the laptop will not be able to connect to the network at all. All the network cards have a software interface which can be pinged in order to check if the network card is faulty or not. By default the software interface address is 127.0.0.0. To check the NIC, click on the start menu and select Run. Now type "PING 127.0.0.0" in the run tab. Now the command prompt window will open and will show the errors in packet received and sent. There should be no errors. If there are errors then the NIC is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Some virus's also prevent the computer from connecting to the network. If the virus links itself with the network resources file then the computer will not be able to connect the laptop to the computer. Scan the computer with an updated antivirus and check the files which are infected. Try to repair or quarantine the infected files. Do not delete any files as it may lead to system failure. If the no of files infected are more then you will have to reinstall the operating system again.
