IP blocking for WiFi Network Security

I am staying in college hostel, i have DELL laptop with Windows XP OS in it and use WiFi daily to access internet. From last few days i have notice that unauthorized user's are also using my owned WiFi facility and downloads many things which don't like at all. So, please suggest me how to block this downloading or how to block other system's using my Wifi network and make my network secure so that only few authorized user's can access my Wifi facility.

I can't tell you the exact solution to your problem but i think so it will work. And you have also not mentioned which WiFi router you are using. But then also would say you to do this, change the password of your router on weekly basis or daily basis if possible and always unplugging it when you are not using it. Hope this might solve your problem, if not then give me the details of the router, i will provide you exact settings for it.

There is standard of technology through which you can secure your Wi-Fi network and that is HOTSPOT. The hotspot technology is an area which covers/coverage from one or more Wi-Fi networks. But it is also known that any Wi-Fi network may have an associated hotspot, and to access that Wi-Fi network it may require a usage fee, registration or valid security credentials. This should solve your problem. If not then refer some other technology or consult network specialist will help for sure.

To solve your problem there a method called Pre-Shared Key (PSK). This method allows to uses a shared pass phrase which can be up to 256 bits in length that permits the device enabled with Wi-Fi technology and wireless access point to mutually derive a link layer encryption keys. To secure Wi-Fi network communications this method uses algorithms, but it relies only on a single shared pass phrase. All devices and wireless access point enabled with Wi-Fi technology must know the pass phrase.

You would be knowing that all the router and the access points use a SSID as a network name. Most of manufacturers usually mark their products with the same SSID set. E.g, the SSID for Linksys devices is normally "linksys." So if your neighbors knows the SSID then they easily break in to your network, but it is a start. More important is that , when SSID default is found, and they find it is as poorly configured network and are much more likely to attack it. So the default SSID must be changed quickly when wireless security is configured on your network.

As you would known IP addresses, there also MAC addresses which are unique to specific network adapters. Turn on the MAC filtering by which there will be limitation in network access to only your systems or to people you know). If you want to use the MAC filtering option you need to find the MAC address of 12 character on every system that will connect to the network. If you have to much of clients then this MAC filtering can be very difficult to do. There are also many other methods like Reduce your WLAN transmitter power, Reduce your WLAN transmitter power, Assign Static IP Addresses to Devices, etc.
