How to detect a malware manually

Hi,
Where can I get a list of various categories of malware threats and detection of viruses. I am looking for information that can help me to understand the types of threats that exist and understand what you have to do in a possible detection by your antivirus. Manual installation is much more effective in most of the cases. I have antivirus already but that is not enough.

There are various categories of virus like Adware. Adware that opens popup advertisements. Adware can be installed by programs called compensate authors for free. And the other one is Backdoor.
