    Virtual Server 2005 R2 on Windows 7 - Is it possible ?

    Hi,

I have tried but I get the message "This program is blocked due to compatibility issues" --- "Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, contact Microsoft Corporation"I want to know whether Virtual Server 2005 R2 works on Windows 7 ? I've heard that Virtual Server 2005 R2 is not compatible (i.e. could not be installed on) Windows 7, is it true ??? Any suggestions or Is there another Virtual Server version that works with it ???

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 (VS2005) R2 SP1 is based on Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 Enterprise Edition and strengthened with new features. Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 enables organizations to improve administrative productivity and rapidly deploy new servers to meet changing business needs through automated deployment and configuration of connected virtual machines that are easily administered with server management tools standard.

Re: Virtual Server 2005 R2 on Windows 7 - Is it possible ?

The reason that Virtual Server 2005 does not run or install properly on Windows 7 RC is because the Virtual Server service (vssrvc.exe) is blocked by the Program Compatibility Obvi Agent and for good reason (the Windows Virtual PC!) ... .

Anyway to disable the Windows Program Compatibility Agent in 7 RC run gpedit.msc and go to "Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\Windows Components\Application Compatibility "in the Group Policy. Enable all the settings there. These should be as: Not Configured. Then go to the node Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Troubleshooting and Diagnostics\Application Compatibility Diagnostics\and disable all the entries there. Open the command line and type: gpupdate/force.

Now if you install IIS as described previously.

Install Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on the executable and select "Run as administrator" when you complete installing the SP1 update 1 running by opening a new command prompt as admin and run the msp file.

Now you need to restore all of the Group Policy settings that change prior to its initial default values.

After you've done this, the Application Compatibility Engine will detect the Virtual Server service and will block it again.
Then we have to rename the vssrvc.exe, for example you can change it to vssrvc_win7.exe. You will find the EXE file into the folder where you installed Virtual Server 2005 (ex. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Server).

Open regedit (registry) and look for all entries that contain "vssrvc.exe" and replace with the new name you gave to vssrvc.exe vssrvc_win7.exe example.

Restart your computer and list, now if you have Virtual Server 2005 on Windows 7 RC!

One last warning. If you have Windows installed and you try Virtual PC and Virtual PC to run Windows simultaneously with the Virtual Server 2005 it freezes and you have to do a reset. However, they can coexist on the same machine.

And obviously, this solution is not supported by Microsoft, so you run it with care and remember that is only because you need it:

If Virtual Server 2005 works with the beta version of Windows 7 build, then what have you done to make this program fails the RC version. If you have more than one vm running simultaneously, Win 7 VPC will do a much better job than VPC 2007 because of the improved threading model. If all that Microsoft is trying to do is encourage people to use the Windows 7 native VHD support. Just download the "Windows Virtual PC" used for "XPMode" and "Create virtual machine" with old vhd.
