Try resetting the netgear dg834g router and then reconfiguring the options through the control panel (usually browser-based). You will need to connect to the router directly (via an Ethernet cable) in order to access the setup pages.
Reconnect the netgear dg834g router, modem, and laptop. Check that all cables attached to the router and computer are secure. May be an issue with your key you are using. You don't actually need to install software to configure wireless router. Check the Internet LED is lit. If it is not, troubleshoot light status, as explained in the router manual.
If you do not see the Wireless Network Connection icon in the Network Connections folder, or if you cannot view the properties, there is a problem with the driver for the wireless network adapter. If the Authentication tab is missing in the Wireless Network Connection properties, make sure that the Wireless Zero Configuration service is running.
