What is needed to create a ring network

    Hi,
I want to practice networking in Windows. I have a set of 3 computers and a laptop. Now what can be done here to bring them under a single network. I had also arranged networking cables for the same. How does a ring network works and what are needed in it. What is the other way to establish a local network on Windows. I am currently going for the basic steps of Windows XP.

Re: What is needed to create a ring network

In a ring network, each computer is connected to at most 2 other computers via a cable called BNC. For a computer to connect to this network, it must have a network card equipped with a BNC plug (round plug). NE2000 compatible cards, available for less than 100 FF have taken this, and a "T" and, according to the manufacturer, a cap. In the case of a network between 2 machines only, the 2 fittings are not useful, simply connect the 2 machines by directly connecting the BNC cable on the network card. But beyond 2 computers, the T becomes necessary for each computer, while only 2 plugs are needed, regardless of network size.

The T switch is screwed on each network adapter to allow computers to connect them via BNC, form a ring. Beware, the ring should not be closed, ie a network of this type, there are still 2 computers at the ends which are connected by cable to one other computer. And finally the network and enable it to function, place a cap on the 2 computers end. The advantage of such networks is that it is simple to implement and not expensive, in fact, no need for additional hardware in addition to the cards and cables.

In ring network there is some issues. In some points, the network speed is limited by the BNC cable, ie theoretically 10 megabytes per second (Mps), but often that speed is less. And for it to work requires that all networked computers are on, and when any addition or deletion of a computer on the network, it can function as all cables are reconnected. Or either sometime ip repairing also works.

Regarding the star network, computers are more interconnected, but each is connected to a hub (hub or switch) via a RJ45 cable. To establish such a network requires that each machine has a network card equipped with a RJ45 (taken flat), but it is also a hub for centralized network. NE2000 compatible cards also have RJ45, but there are more and more network adapters with only RJ45. He must then choose the card according to the network connection speed that you want 10 or 100 Mbps.

In the Start Network if the network operates at a speed of 100 Mbps, it is necessary that the hub accepts the 100 Mbps. The main difference between a hub and switch is a hub share the connection speed between all computers (there are more computers connected over the network is slow) while the switch maintains a connection speed up (10 or 100 Mbps) for each computer, and network speed does not change depending on the size of the network. It takes about 400 FF to 100 Mbps hub 8 ports, and nearly 1,000 FF to switch 10/100 Mps 8 ports.

The number of ports is the number of machines that can connect to a hub. In addition there are 2 types of RJ45 cable, the normal, which can connect a computer to a hub or switch, and the crusaders who can either connect 2 computers together without a hub or hub to connect between 2 so they can connect more machines on the network. Besides the speed of the network, the main advantage of the star network is to enable a computer to connect or disconnect from the network without interrupting it

    Hi

I thing the token ring network is simple in design and conceptual operation. The key to the system is a Token which is actually a data frame or container for storing data that is to be transmitted down a ring of computers connected to the network. A simple analogy is to imagine a clock with each number on the clock face representing one computer on a network; 12 numbers, 12 computers.
A token is released into the network, moving around the network, 'stopping off' at each computer to check if it is needed. Assume that computer 3 wants to send a data package to computer 9. When the free token 'stops off' at computer 3, it is grabbed and the data is 'injected' into the empty vessel and then sent on its way. The token passes each computer in the sequence (e.g. computer 4, 5, 6 and so on); each computer notes that the packet is not addressed to it and 'rejects' it, in effect, "passing" it on to the next computer in the series.
Once the packet or token reaches computer 9 (to which the data is addressed), it is 'grabbed' again and an exchange of data occurs - the data is released to computer 9, and the computer 'injects' an acknowledgment receipt into the token. The token (with the acknowledgment receipt) is released back into the network, proceeding down the chain (e.g. moving to computers 9, 10 and so on) with each one again 'rejecting' the token since it is not addressed to them.
Once the token reaches Computer 3 (which was the 'sender' of the data packet), the token is again 'grabbed,' with the acknowledgment message being read; in a sense, the token is emptied of its contents by the original sending computer and sent on its way, ready for use by another computer.

    Good luck
