windows 7 Crossover problem

I and my friend have connected our pc's with a crossover cable and we both have installed Windows 7 on our pc's. The only difference is the ethernet card that we have in common, he has a 10/100 ethernet adapter where else I have a 10/100/1000 gigabit ethernet. Now the problem is that we are not able to connect each other, even on ip messenger we cannot see each other. Any help would be appreciated.

I think that the firewall needs to be configured to allow ECHO REQUESTS on the OS. If you cannot even ping it, it may be the Windows firewall preventing it from responding. Are you running any other firewall app? Try to disable it and see if it works.

Have you tried to do a repair of the internet connections on both your friends pc and your pc by not fiddling with the ip's. If it doesn't work disable them both, unpin the cables and reconnect them after at least for 10 seconds. If it doesn't work do that all over again and restart BOTH pc's!

Have you set IP's on both pc's? Try a normal one, not x-over. Some not so long time ago we tried to connect my Vista machine to my friends XP and x-over didn't work... just out of curiosity i tried a normal cable and it did the job.
