Setting up ad hoc network between two laptops for sharing internet connection

    Hello Teachers here,

    I have two laptops

laptop 1 with windows vista home premium
laptop 2 with windows XP service pack2

I want to set up a wireless ad hoc network by laptop 2 (it has internet) and share its internet connection
so that laptop 1 can use it. I have been able to set up ad hoc network but unable to share the internet connection.

    I did the followings:

    1. In laptop 2 (has internet), in the advanced tab of the Wireless network connection properties, I have checked the
option - Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection.

    2. I have set IP addresses as follows:

    Laptop 1:

    ip address 192.168.1.1
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.1.2
    dns: 192.168.1.2
    alt dns: blank

    Laptop 2:

    ip address 192.168.1.2
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    gateway: blank
    dns: blank
    alt dns: blank

All settings are for Wireless network connection properties. Have i done any mistaken?

Should browser (internet explorer/ firefox) settings be made?

I am a novice. Pls help me in solving the problem.

Re: Setting up ad hoc network between two laptops for sharing internet connection

Get a crossover network cable, NOT a patch network cable and hook it between the two laptops, this would be the physical equivalent of an ad hoc connection. To connect successfully make sure the wireless hardware is enabled on both computers or laptops. You will see your connection listed under Wireless Network Connection on the other computer. Simply connect from there and you are done sharing the internet connection. Instead of receiving the internet via CAT 5 patch cable and sharing it wirelessly with an ad hoc, receive the internet via wireless and share it with a crossover cable.
