Have you contacted to your ISP? it can be issue from their end. Whats your OS and setup, DSL or ADSL. If you're using windows Xp I would check your event viewer for information first. Mark the time your internet goes down, check your router and see if there's anything weird happening in the logs. Heat could also be an issue.

You can try by changing the micro-filters & wireless channel. Because issues like losing wireless connectivity, usually happens due to interference. And most of the times cause of losing wireless connectivity is cordless phones. A lot of times they operate at the same frequency as your 2wire 2701. Try changing wireless channels on the 2wire 2701 and raising the wireless broadcast power. To change wireless channels open your browser and type in address bar 192.168.1.254. Now on configuration page, Click Home Network -> Wireless Settings. You'll find everything in there. Check out this help link http://support.2wire.com/?page=view&article=47

Its sounds like problems with the filters or wiring in the house. Contact AT&T and ask them for sending their home networking specialist. They have a tool that keeps logs of your modem activities including involuntary reset of the modem. and if you have red lights on them there is a great possible that it is defective and you need to request for a free replacement.
