How to hide shared foldes in Windows server

Hi,
I had setup Windows Server in my office recently which comprises of 4 PC as users. Here I need some general tips on some questions. First if I shared some folder on the server then is there a way by which I can hide them and display the same only when updated. Second thing i was trying to configure folder permission by removing the default settings. Now when I try to set the same then a error comes up denoting permission is removed. How to restore them back. What are the most easy way to quickly share folder.

Re: How to hide shared foldes in Windows server

It is possible to hide shared folder by using the Access control list in Windows Server. This best for security purpose. Here by hiding the share folder can be accessed without getting into noticed. So here you can only allow certain users to access the folder. By using Access-based Enumeration you can do this. This will only work in Windows Server 2003 SP1. ABE is available for free. This are installed in Windows server as AMD64, I386 and IA64. Just here configure the ABE on the folder and then configure ACL.

Re: How to hide shared foldes in Windows server

it easy to quickly share a folder in Windows server 2003. This can be done by Shared Folder MMC snap-in. Right click on My Computer and then click on Manage. A Computer Management Windows will pop up. You can create here fsmgmt.msc file. After that create a new shortcut on the desktop and place the following command - %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\Rundll32.exe ntlanui.dll,ShareCreate . Name it and run it.

Re: How to hide shared foldes in Windows server

First try to take owner ship of one or two folders. Then see weather it is working or not. Take the permission first for root folders by right clicking on them and ticking the permission settings. The checkbox will enable the same. In this way first you can restore the old permissions and then take ownership back again.
