Re: How does terminal server works

Generally in information technology, a terminal server is a hardware device or server that provides terminals (PCs, printers, and other devices) with a common connection point to a local or wide area network. A Terminal Server (also referred to as Serial Servers) enable companies to connect devices with an RS232, RS422 or RS485 serial interface to Ethernet LANs. The primary application scenario is to enable serial devices to access network server applications, or vice versa, where security of the data on the LAN is not generally an issue.

Terminal Services in Windows Server 2003 provides new options for application deployment, more efficient access to data over low bandwidth, reuse of older hardware, remote management, and other tasks. The terminals connect to the terminal server from their RS-232C or RS-423 serial port. The other side of the terminal server connects through network interface cards (NIC) to a local area network (LAN) (usually an Ethernet or Token Ring LAN) through modems to the dial-in/out wide area network, or to an X.25 network or a 3270 gateway.

Re: How does terminal server works

Terminal Services provides the ability to host multiple, simultaneous client sessions on Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The use of a terminal server means that each terminal doesn't need its own network interface card or modem. Terminal Server is capable of directly hosting compatible multi-user client desktops running on a variety of Windows-based and non Windows-based hardware. The connection resources inside the terminal server are usually shared dynamically by all attached terminals. Terminal Services consists of four components: the Windows Server 2003 multi-user kernel, the Remote Desktop client, the Terminal Services Licensing service, and Session Directory Services.
