Lighttpd is usually used to create a much safer, fast and a standards-complian web server. This servers can works out much faster in critical environments also. It offers you Load-balancing, chroot support, Conditional rewrites , SSL and TLS support, Authentication against an LDAP server, RRDtool statistics, Flexible virtual hosting, Cache Meta Language, etc. It offers you more features as compare to Nginx.

I will list you some pros and cons of both the web server builder. This will help you to understand more easily about the difference. First if we talk about Lighttpd then it is light weight, it is fast, there are many modules, you have also mod_magnet and there is a community support also. But on the other hand it is not stable, there is not support for mod_rewrite and memory leak issue. Now to Nginx. It is also lite, fast and stable. It is have a better Rewrite Module. The things which lacks is not community support and also there is no support for CGI.
