Re: Netgear cable modem vs router

A modem is a device which is adapted to a telecommunications link.

A router is a component that manages the "roads". ie, it will provide a number of functions in the telecommunications network (eg allowing to share a line between several PCs) initially, a router does not make the modem function, and vice versa.

However, there are nowadays "modems routers" that dealers usually sell accessories PC known as routers. these (not traders) often incorporate a number of functions "network" NAT, Firewall, possibly anti virus, etc, and allows multiple connection type (cable and wireless for example) is a good compromise to operate an internet connection "simple" (not a package internet / phone / TV) there are very good models from Netgear.

Re: Netgear cable modem vs router

For interconnecting remote networks it is necessary to link these networks through a telephone connection in this case using modems.

Modem / router -> router that accesses the Internet alone as a great

Router -> System equipment for networking of multiple computers.

You must connect your modem to your PC and your router as well but not connected the two sets.

Internet -> Router / Modem -> straight cable (or usb but rare) -> PC (s)
