The first beta of the new virus is free online. The interface has been completely redesigned, and the software is faster and less dependent on resources. Final version scheduled for the month of October.
Avast! 5.0 is on track. The publisher Alwil has just put online a first beta of its free antivirus. The final version is announced for October and will be available in three products: two paid (professional publishing and following safety) and free. Alwil benefit to rename this version Avast! Free Antivirus, more explicit than the current name (Avast! Home Edition). Users with a current subscription will receive the new edition free of charge (for versions).
The editor invites users to test this first beta, which will remain active for two months (no registration or activation of the software). In the meantime, new beta will be launched.
Alwil is, however, warned people against the bugs and shortcomings of this very preliminary version. "It is not advisable to use this beta to protect your system," warning it abundantly clear the editor. Some components are not fully activated (as antirootkit, protection web, etc..) And signature-based antivirus is not updated.
More discreet than the start of PC
Most curious, however, be a good idea of what the future Avast!. The changes are obvious from the installation, the interface has been completely redesigned. Both interfaces (basic and expert) are replaced by a single console, expected to be adapted to all user profiles.
The new developments are also under the hood. The software would be less dependent on resources. "We have dramatically improved the time to start the computer, the slowdown due to Avast! is almost negligible, "the publisher promised on 20 July when it announced the preparation of the beta. We will see if this is true when tested.
Security side, Alwil has strengthened its defenses. The antivirus engine has been improved and optimized. Avast! 5 now includes a module for detecting unwanted software (spyware, for example). It also uses heuristic methods to detect new threats in real time, for example by identifying the abnormal behavior of component software.
A novelty that does not really, the editor himself recognizes that these functions were already largely implemented in previous versions, but without advertising on its part. The willingness of competitors to communicate on the subject has probably led to Alwil more.
