USB printer on network

My Mac desktop G4 and laptop are networked by a wireless router with internet.Getting internet for both computers also files between the computers. The HP Laser Jet P1505n printer is hooked by USB to the desktop G4 and Printer Sharing is turned on in both. But can't print from the laptop. I could just print the document from the laptop through the desktop which was hooked to the printer by USB.I attempted to plug the printer into the router directly by ethernet and never found my way out, so I wanted to go back to the old reliable way of doing it.How do I try to troubleshoot this?

any ideas would be brilliant.!!

Re: USB printer on network

May be you can turn Printer Sharing off on the computers that don't have the Printer physically connected to them, then reboot. When the Laptop has Printer Sharing turned on, it thinks it has the Printer(s) connected to it, and will not look beyond itself for one.Remember a USB to RJ45 cable will not work, if the signal will still be USB, not ethernet.which will plug into your network/connect via wireless that effectively turn your printer into a standalone network printer.

Re: USB printer on network

Print server work on it's own IP address and network printer work on it's own static IP address...so you can not connect network printer on the ethernet port of the PSUS4.You better go to the G4 System Preferences and to the Printer preference pane, select the printer and click on "Share this printer" hope this will help

Re: USB printer on network

Bro,the IP address is for the "printer server" which is basically a software residing in its memory that allows your USB printer to appear on the net with a valid IP address. The "print server" IP address is not for the PSUS4 as a whole equipment. Is it showing two devices on the printer section of the status screen? I don't think that printer is going to work. Looks like the MCA is confused by the multifunction printer.
